As of a few hours ago, we are the proud new owners of a West Highland White Terrier! Buying a dog was NOT on my "to do" list for today, however, we decided last night that a Westie was what we were looking for "when it comes time". I called a couple of breeders today, and found how long the wait lists were ( years in some cases!) and the prices:faint:

Later in the day, we stopped by a pet store to admire some Pomeranians (my husbands preference), and on the spur of the moment I called their other location to inquire what breeds of dogs they had available. The first words out of her mouth were " I have a Westie". We drove right over, intending to maybe put a deposit and pick her up next week, but I couldn't bear to leave her there. I never dreamed we would ever buy a dog from a pet store, always thought we would go to the humane society, but most of what they have are large, shedding dogs. Once we decided on a Westie ( and they have been on our short list of "nice to have" for several years) it seemed like fate that instead of having to wait years, there was one available today. This breeder has been supplying this pet store for several years, and I am satisfied that we have a 100% Westie. We had not planned on showing or breeding anyway, so unregistered is not important to us, we just wanted a nice family pet. Our new darlings' name is Suzy.

Congratulations!! Animals can be such wonderful additions to the family. Enjoy your new addition! :thewave: :cheer2: :jumping1:

Congratulations, Faye. We have a pup, too, a German Shepherd. We attended our first Puppy Kindergarten class last night and it was such a hoot!! All the pups were adorable, the personalities and interactions really crack me up. I've done training before but with a different trainer farther away. This woman, a veterinarian, actually spoke for almost an hour and a half, just talking about all there is to know about raising a well behaved dog. A nice thing. Many people had questions and nobody seemed inhibited to ask which was good. She brought her dog to show what a well behaved dog could be like. I was glad to see a good turnout.

Best of luck with Suzy. The first month for us was a little painful -forgot how much work it was - but now I love her lots and can't remember what it was like around here without her! (Also have a 13y.o. Shepherd who luckily likes her too).

Congrats! new additions are so fun and are worth every moment. I have 2 four legged children and look forward to one day adding another one - but not for a while.
It's funny reading about waiting until the time is right. I ended up buying my youngest "child" out of the spur of the moment. She too came from a pet store, even though I never wanted to ever buy a pet from there. She just sat there in her cage and her eyes had me. She was so cuddly and friendly, and we ended up leaving with her. Best pet I have ever owned too.
Just like with human children, four legged ones come unexpectedly as well, but are always a blessing!
