Its the question thts odd, not the names :sunny:

I'm an Ohio girl writing textbook storyproblem questions for TX and California and would like to use more Hispanic names than Mya and Miguel. I looked on a list, but you know Gertrude is on babyname lists too, but what kid is named that? YKWIM?

So, could you hit me with some names that there would be one of in a class or two of kids?

Thanks a million!

Jose, Jesus, Alejandro, Tomas, Felipe, Juanita, Alecia, Sergio, Ana, .... now I hit a blank. ;)

THANKS! :thumbsup2 That is really great!

That site is where I was, but from outside a culture, how do you decide if Pilar is a reasonable name, or a name only a rock star would pick? (no offense intended to any currently reading rock stars LOL)

As I was checking back here I noticed the Spanish part of the forum. I'm going to dive in there as well :wave2:

Look at newspapers in cities with large hispanic populations, and look at the local h.s. sports news. That will show you the sort of names that kids actually have. Some good possibilities are Miami, San Diego, San Antonio, Albequerque, etc.

The phone book also works, but that will mostly be male names; women tend to list their phones by initial.

jose, juan, Eva, Rosita, Miguel, jorge, hector, pepe, Alfonso, Maria, Lupe/Lupita, Carlos, Julian, Angel, penelope, Simon, Beatriz, Emilio

Those are all in DHs family, all Hispanic.

I have a Lidia, Enrique, Gerardo, Brianna, Adrian, Anthony, Darlene.....doesn't sound too hispanic now that I see it. HMMMM....

I live in Texas, with lots of Hispanics, and they seem to be naming their children Cathy, Chris, Amber, Jessica, Tiffany, John, Jacob, etc. And what is my blonde little girl named? Ariana! :lmao:

The kid's in my class when I taught in the Bronx:

Rosa, Aricelis, Mercedes, Maria, Margarita, Jose, Augusto, Francisco, Jesus, Antonio...that's all I can think of at the moment!

in my kid's classes-'little jose' (seems like it's always preceded by 'little' because they are always named after dad :teeth: ), oscar, monica, lupe (short for guadalupe), connie (short for consuela), margaret (margarita), juan and juana.

my daughter's name is also very popular within the california hispanic community 'marissa'. only they pronounce it 'maritsia'.

as an aside-the comedian george lopez does a very funny discussion (in his comedy routine) of the trend in california wherein the current generation of young hispanic children are being given very 'trendy' non hispanic names. he talks of how he always does a double take when he hears a spanish speaking mom talking to/of her children and hearing names like 'tiffany', 'ashley', 'slade' and 'sean' appear. he contends that given the hispanic cultural habit of honoring relatives by passing on names to subsequent generations of children there are going to be some realy unhappy kids down the line when they get 'saddled' with 'designer names' :teeth:
