OT- NYC hotel advice

So I am seriously considering a trip to NYC in August to see Little Mix perform on The Today Show on AUGUST 18. I've started looking at hotels but want some advice as to suggestions of hotels close to Times Square that aren't ridiculously expensive. The trip would be AUGUST 17-19. If I can work this out I'll seriously be the happiest girl on the planet as LM means the world to me.

Perhaps you can define what you consider to be "ridiculously expensive." What is the maximum per night you can consider and how many would be in the room?

Are you only staying in nyc 1 night or 2? I have tons of recommendations if you were coming sometimes in jan - early may but once memorial day weekend hits it's full price or higher only. Use a travel site and see what they have that comes up. airbnb.com would also be helpful. Are you completely against being just outside manhattan? There's a lot of reasonable cost places, many with free buses to/from 1 block away from where today show is filmed that pick you up at the hotel. Maybe 20-25 minutes away from times square. and they run 24/7 so you don't have to miss out for the night life. To be honest, you'll spend less staying in these places and using uber to get in/out then you will for 1 night in manhattan.

I'm not completely against it. I just don't want to be too far away since I've never been to the city before. As for price point I would like something no more than 200-250 a night.

And it's just me and 2 nights.

Most hotels in Manhattan are closer to $400/night than $200. Even the Hampton Inn is over $250. We're staying at the Marriott Marquis next month for 5 nights. Thank goodness DH has Marriott Points because he has enough for us to stay for free, otherwise it would be over $2,000, closer to $2500. We go to NYC every 18-24 months, usually for 3 nights to see a couple of shows and sightsee. I love Manhattan, but it is crazy expensive.

http://www.sixtyhotels.com would be below your budget if it was not peak season (usually about 120-200). It'll be a little over your budget for those dates (should be about 300). The lower east side is convenient to both subways (4-5 stops away) and about a $10-12 taxi ride ($7-8 uber) to the times square area. it's also a nice nightlife, resturant area (for all different budgets) and just south of the east village and LES is known for it's collection and style of night life. It's a really clean place that I've recommended for some friends in town but they are usually not around in peak season. In the same area of town there is some others, including a comfort inn. The area is only a few blocks by a few blocks but lately a lot of hotels have popped up there (last decade).

From there, I would recommend the travel sites and do some hotel searches. If your flying into town, the airline might have some better deals than just randomly looking for a place. Anywhere in manhattan is going to be convenient to where your going. It's not uncommon for a fancy looking $400 chain place to be a let down. Just be ready for that when you decide.

The normal recommendation if you are on a tight budget is to stay in Long Island City instead of Manhattan. The Verve is one option I know of. For others check out Trip Advisor. The destination experts there with your dates and budget will suggest options. Long Island city is a quick subway ride to everything in Manhattan. You just want to make sure to book something close to the subway.

We stayed at the Affinia 50 when we went for Spring Break 3 years ago. It was a nice boutique hotel. The AAA rate for your dates is $266.00, and was withing walking distance.

I highly recommend the Roosevelt Hotel. It's at Grand Central Station, and a short walk to Times Square. It's historic, and very pretty, but the rooms are really small. However, it feels upscale, the neighborhood seems safe, and the rooms are probably within your budget. We stayed there two years ago and would stay again!

Try the Manhattan at Times Square Hotel. It's on 7th Avenue and 51st street. Go to Facebook and like their page. They have rates at $179/night for those dates that include a grab and go breakfast. I've stayed there before - it's a decent place in a good area.

Tight budget, 1 night, 1 or 2 people = Priceline. Use sites like biddingfortravel or betterbidding to find out how and what to bid.

We often get a hotel in Jersey City near a Path train station.

We used Priceline once and got a room at the Shoreham for $150/night. I think this was 2 years ago. We liked the location and it was close the subway. The room was small but adequate. I have also stayed in the Meadowlands area hotels and just taken the transit bus into the city. A little less convenient but not a bad option at all. The buses run pretty regularly and drop you right at the port authority.

My daughter and I stayed at The Edison Hotel the first part of June for one night. I think I paid around $150. It's an older hotel that's being refurbished and we were in an updated room. It's right off of Times Square. The location for us couldn't be beat and the room was lovely. No view to speak of because we were on the second floor but we weren't there to see it anyway!

Pod hotel looks so cool to me or stay in NJ near the Newark airport with access to a train into NYC. If you are driving in prices to park should be considered because the expense can be high, hotels charge & lots are $$$

I grew up in that area, not recommended ever for nyc, ok if your on layover or something. It's just not safe and there is no direct access to the airport train stop so you have to go into elizabeth or newark and that is not safe for anyone, even if you live there. For jersey, near citbank stadium there is a lot of reasonable places, most either have a bus or on a bus line that goes in/out of nyc. Uber you usually don't even hit the minimum fee (ny/nj has a minimum fee)

Mariott Marquis (as someone laready mentioned) is one of the best locations in my opinion however unless you get some great deal its just too expensive- but worth looking into you never know what you might find.

We have used Hotwire everytime we go to the city and always had good luck. I never go above $220 a night. In case you dont already know- with Hotwire you don't know the hotel name until you book however you get pretty specific about location and type of hotel you are looking for. You also cant cancel. Some people aren't comfortable with that but Im cheap so its worth the risk

Groupon has some good deals now, my friend just got Tryp by Wyndham for $99/night. Thats in the Times Square area I believe.

Newark was never the perfect place for a stroll but I think Uber has changed the way people travel so much that there is no reason a person can't stay at a Newark hotel where extended parking is often free, and use the car service back-and-forth to the ferry to save on parking fees and time. No reason to wander outside of the hotel, I have never done it but I've known of people who did & it works for them especially during times of the year when New York City hotels might be sold out. I looked it up & the eight to $12 minimum for Uber in New York City is nothing compared to the expenses for tolls, parking and time spent in traffic. I can tell you that the Marriott Marquis attendants won't allow me to take my car in and out even though the city does now allow on the street metered parking- last time I went they told me they would charge me fees for bringing in and out. As an aside, I know many people like the subway but it gets stuck way too often in the summer for my comfort- The horror stories are legendary just google
