OT- NYC hotel advice

Newark was never the perfect place for a stroll but I think Uber has changed the way people travel so much that there is no reason a person can't stay at a Newark hotel where extended parking is often free, and use the car service back-and-forth to the ferry to save on parking fees and time. No reason to wander outside of the hotel, I have never done it but I've known of people who did & it works for them especially during times of the year when New York City hotels might be sold out. I looked it up & the eight to $12 minimum for Uber in New York City is nothing compared to the expenses for tolls, parking and time spent in traffic. I can tell you that the Marriott Marquis attendants won't allow me to take my car in and out even though the city does now allow on the street metered parking- last time I went they told me they would charge me fees for bringing in and out. As an aside, I know many people like the subway but it gets stuck way too often in the summer for my comfort- The horror stories are legendary just google

My parents still live 3 miles from newark airport, it's a 50-150 each way uber depending on type of car you pick. Even taxi/uber + train, the couple dollars saved vs a secaucus hotel, many of which have a free for flat rate $1-2 shuttle to 1 block from times square and runs 24 hours is, to me worth the difference. She wants to be in NYC and trying to fit it in her budget.

I'll leave it at this, to me it's a little far and unsafe for a quick trip to try to take in part of nyc while seeing the today show.

I lived in the area and worked in Manhattan just below Times Square. If you are not very familiar with Manhattan and the area, traveling alone, you need to look for as close to Times Square area as you can and if not a brand name, check them out. Absolutely not worth the time or money to be out of Manhattan. Discount sites are great as long as you know the hotel. My goal would be walking distance.

Several Hilton Garden Inns in Times Square, NY Hilton Midtown, several Hampton Inns with AAA is about in your budget.
Quite a few different Holiday Inns all around Times Square in your budget for those dates.
Millennium Broadway Hotel - Times Square should be in your budget.
Check these out - good ratings:
The Paramount - A Times Square
The Time Hotel
The Roosevelt Hotel

We stayed at the Row on 8th Avenue (very close to Times Square) last summer. The room was small but clean and the hotel was very quiet. It was a short walk to the Today Show area.

We stayed at the Affinia Shelburne in Midtown for spring break. It was a quick walk to and from Grand Central and we could get anywhere from there. The rate averaged $256 per night, and that was for a 2-room king suite. They had smaller rooms for closer to $200 per night.

We stayed hotel 35, herald square right near Macy's and good walking distance from Times Square they also do continental breakfast included which fills you up until dinner ! Good price, great location some rooms even look out to Empire State Building which is round the corner

I'm going to give another vote to Priceline. I've had great luck getting awesome deals on 4* hotels in the Midtown West area for bids of $90 - 125. I've always traveled in the summer. With one or two people, it's a great option for a deal. Check out Hotwire or Hotels.com to get an idea of current prices. Start a your bid good bit below, utilize free rebids, and see what you get.

I think the Manhattan at Times Square might be a perfect choice for you. It used to be a Sheraton. Not cheap, but I just checked, and it's about $200 a night. Heart of Times Square and home page says book now for Amex gift card and other perks. I had a birthday party for my daughter there when the Sheraton had a pool. VERY safe part of TS.

Dd14 and I stayed at the pod 51 hotel for 1 night. Its near 53rd and Lexington train stop.its more if a residential area which is familiar to us and very safe. It is a quick ride to Times Square and close to the UN. The rooms are tiny but the place is very clean. We did the bunk bed room with bathroom in the hall. It was fun for 1 night then we switched to a traditional hotel. We have family in Manhattan so go there often enough and like to try out different hotels. We tend to stay near PennStation and actually prefer not being in Times Square.

We stayed at "the hotel" for a school trip with DSs school. It's nothing fancy and walking distance from Times Square. I don't know how much per night-shouldn't be too much it's not fancy at all, the intercontinental DH and I stayed at a couple years ago was MUCH MUCH nicer.

I live in NYC but wanted a night to myself for my birthday. I got a good rate at the NY Palace (at Easter). It was nice! It is close to Radio City Music Hall---not too far from Times sq. Enjoy your trip.
