We're thinking of going to New Orleans for about 5 days in May following a convention for my fiance's job. Has anyone been? Any advice on where to stay? Do we need to rent a car?

Any advice from anyone would be very appreciated....I feel like I'm walking in unknown territory for this city....

Thanks - Jo

I was there about a year ago and had a blast!!!

Here is a great website to start you off: http://www.neworleansonline.com

Nothing there is cheap, but it's so worth it. The food and drink are great, the atmosphere is fantastic. We stayed in the French Quarter and we were glad we did - we could walk to everything we wanted to see and do.

Some tours we took:
Honey Island Swamp Tour
City Tour (which took us to an old graveyard and around the broken levee area, through 9th Ward historic Garden District and French Quarter)
Haunted French Quarter walking Tour

We'll go back for sure one day.

Depending on when you are going..Jazzfest is the last weekend of April and first weekend of May. It's amazing!!! The music..the food...sooo much fun. There are some huge names there this year too. I'm seeing if I can work out going for a weekend but I'm not sure it will happen :(

NUAWLINS is a great place to vacation.

I was born and raised there, and would be happy to answer questions for you.

If you only want to see the French Quarter, no you don't need a car.

Where to stay, do you want quiet? or to be in the middle of the party on Burbon? :cool1:

To be really honest, I don't know much about NO to even know where to start. Both my fiance and myself are interested in history, and knowing that there is a bunch of historical areas in NO, we probably would like to visit some of those areas. We are also shopping junkies, and we will probably be buying lots there (hopefully there is a great outlet mall there - we LOVE those malls!). We also cannot wait to try the cuisine. We want both quiet, but close to the action type of lodgings. I don't really know how big Bourbon street is, or what part of it is where we should be looking at. I'm worried that we'll get a place in a seedier part of town that will make us feel uncomfortable...so really, a place that's safe is important to us (well, mostly me;) ). I don't really want to rent a car as I have read that parking can be an issue, so if we don't have to, we won't, but if we think we will be doing a lot of travel to and from places, maybe we should consider it.

Thanks for the info so far....I know I will have tons of questions!
