We bought a 50" Panasonic Plasma and I LOVE it.
I did a trashload of research (online forums, consumer reports, visited friends' houses with LCDs and Plasmas, CNET, etc). I went with a plasma b/c of the better picture quality. The processor speed (how quickly the pic refreshes) on most LCDs is either 60hz or 120hz. Our plasma is 600 hz.
The issue with image retention/burn in is slowly becoming a thing of the past. Our tv is a model released this year and has an anti-image-retention function that will help wipe the screen IF an image gets burned in. However - my research showed newer models don't have risk of burn-in unless a static image is one for 3-4 hours straight. Therefore - as someone else suggested - if you plan on using the TV as a 2nd computer monitor - plasmas are not for you.
In terms of glare - the only time we notice a glare on our screen is when it is off. I might notice it a bit when we watch a dark movie (i.e. Dark Knight) but otherwise - we don't notice it - and have a large sliding door opening into the room.
I've heard great things about the Samsung - it was our 2nd choice.
