OT: Need advice... What do you do if your toddler BITES?

We have a biter as well - she is 2.5 and has been biting on and off for about a year - both herself and others. It peaked right after her hospital stay at WDW last March. She is very advanced (has been potty trained for awhile now) & extremely verbal so those aren't reasons - she's also an only child, so no sibling isses to deal with either. She also had a very difficult time teething, but now that is over with (had all of her teeth by 2) and she occasionally still bites when she is in a difficult situation such as: stuck in her stroller or high chair, backed into a corner by another child or if someone is tickling her. We absolutely under no circumstances have ever hit her or roughhoused with her (don't believe it's a good activity for kids to get into at all as it always leads to trouble and teaches them that it's ok to be rough for fun), but once in awhile an uncle or cousin will tickle her in a rough manner and despite the fact that she's laughing, she has biten before. As you can tell we've analyzed every behaviour and have noticed every trigger as there has always been one - this is not justifying the behaviour, but being able to understand what causes the behaviour, whether it be her not being able to express herself, teething problems, sharing problems, etc.

I have a big problem with how some people feel that biting is not normal, yet they let their kids hit, kick or roughhouse (not making a judgment against OP at all) - it's all normal at this age. Any physical outbursts should not be tolerated, but I do find (although most people have been very supportive on this thread) most people are very judgmental of biters and their parents and I must say, we are terrific parents who happen to have a child who is oral and takes her frustrations out through her mouth. Things are getting better, and they will get better for you too.

Good luck, Tiger

:rotfl: I know just what you mean. Our biting started when my son met his older cousins who were constantly wrestling, jumping on each other and everyone else, and generally being very rough. My sister is a great parent, but my then 20 month old didn't know the difference between aggression and aggressive play. The next several times he saw them he bashed them with his toys in an attempt at play. My sister thought I had a little ruffian, when he was only copying them!

I think sometimes the biting starts as teething, transition, whatever, but can become a pattern that takes a long time to overcome.

OP is back... Thanks so much to everyone who has shared their experiences here. Many of your posts really reassured me. At the suggestion of so many of you, I called my son's teacher yesterday to give her a "heads up". (I made sure he could not hear my conversation... Great tip, Mom to Jordan!)

He went back to preschool today. (The 2 year-old class at our school only meets on Friday mornings.) Anyway, the teacher said that he was wonderful and very cooperative the whole time. :cool1:

No more bites at home since the original incidents, either. I've been watching the boys much more closely, and trying to discourage any rough play by redirecting them to crafts, books, etc.

DS2 seems to have moved on to something else now.... Drum roll, please.... Spitting!!! Ah, the joys of parenting a two-year old boy. :rotfl:

:) Spitting is actually the offense my DD did when she was 2 that got soap put in her mouth. She would spit in my face when she got mad at me for something, she was a very bright & advanced 2 year old, so there's no way that was acceptable to me. I warned her finally that if she spit at me one more time, she would get soap in her mouth... the next day she did it...... and of course, never did it again! :) (no, I'm not looking for parenting advice here about how awful soap is, just telling a story.)

Gosh, my brother spit at me until he was about 12! I'd call him an idiot, and he'd spit!! Of course, he bit me and drew blood when he was 2. . . gotta love that boy.
