OT- Moving to Texas!

Hubby and I are considering moving to Mesquite, Texas and I was wondering if there is anyone out there that could tell me some info on the area. I have lived in the same city all my life and the idea of packing up and moving terrifies me but the opportunity in another place is better than my family drowning in a town with no economic growth. Could someone please tell me about the area and help ease my mind about this drastic change?!?

Well I am not from Mesquite but I am in the DFW area. I actually don't know much about that city but you would definitely be near a major metropolitan area.

I would suggest that you rent while you decide where you want to live. That way you will be able to make a better decision. You can probably google Mesquite ISD and see what the schools are like. Even if you don't have children, good schools usually mean better home values over the long term.

I hope that someone here can give you some better answers more specific to Mesquite!

I haven't been in Mesquite in a few years, but when we lived in DFW, I would not have chosen that as a place to live. It's kind of in that gray area in many cities where the urban/downtown and the suburban mix. Older homes, older schools, some questionable areas etc...

We chose to live further away from Dallas and moved to Rockwall. We loved it there. Schools are good, development was booming. There were plenty of stores, plenty of homes and it was very safe. Rowlett is also a fairly good area - that's tucked between Mesquite and Rockwall. Similar profile to Rockwall...the homes are more affordable, but the amenities are further away (in Rockwall)...

As a side note, the housing market in the DFW area was some of the most affordable we have ever seen. If you move into a good, safe area you will probably be able to get a 3 bed/2bath home for around/under $200K or so...

I have never been to Texas at all, but the job offer dh is thinking about taking is actually in Garland. Not knowing what the area is like makes it really hard to look for and find info about the surrounding areas. We will probably rent since we are not sure if this is going to be permanent, I think my dh is going to go there for a few months and check it out before we relocate. Thank you for your thoughts.

Hi again, my DH worked in Garland (also not a great area, largely industry/business) while we lived in Rockwall. It was about a 25-30 minute drive. Not too bad really.

Good luck. It was a difficult adjustment for me when we moved (I've lived in the Northeast for a large portion of my life), but we both really loved it there. I had images of cowboys, horses and pick-up trucks, but the DFW metroplex is really a beautiful expansive and kind city. If you give it a chance, I believe you will like it.

I just moved here to Texas from NC. I live in Ft. Worth actually considered Keller, I'm in the Keller school district. It is right outside of Dallas. I understand your concerns, I had them too. I came from a house that was paid for on 9 acres of land to living in the suburbs and having a house payment. AHHH

But like a previous post said, you can buy alot of house out here for less than $200K. We are leasing to purchase our home. It is 2300 sq ft 4BR/2 1/2 bath. 2 car garage with a pretty big back yard for the homes out here. When we are ready to purchase it, the price is set and locked in at $157,000! There is NOWAY that we could buy a house like this, and in such a nice area for this amount of money back home in NC.

I miss NC but Texas is great. The weather gets hot but it is not a humid hot so it is tolerable. This is coming from someone who can't stand the heat and LOVES cold weather.

Thanks for your thoughts and replies. It's looking like the move is going to be a definite so I really have to get my ducks in a row. My mom's best friend's daughters ( we grew up together, but they're a good bit older than me) live in TX, I thought they lived in Houston but last night my mom told me DFW. One lives in Grapevine and the other one in Arlington. I do not know where this is at in comparison to the other areas I have already mentioned but they all appear close while looking at the map.

Good luck with your move! We are in the Houston area, but sister and BIL were in the DFW area for a while and loved it. I am not really sure about many of the subburbs around DFW, but I do know Rockwall is a beautiful place. We drove through there before and I would have moved there in a heartbeat!

Moves to different states are hard, but Texas is a very welcoming place, with friendly people. You will feel at home in no time!

It's better than the image I have had all my life- I had a very obnoxious uncle who used to go around saying that the only thing in Texas was steers and queers. I guess I like the cowboy image a little better.

I live in N. Dallas, Collin County. Homes are very affordable here, but remember that property taxes, electric bill, home insurance is a little higher than other places. I agree with anothe poster, Mesquite wouldn't be my choice, but if your husband is working in Garland, you should consider Wylie, Plano (homes a little more expensive but schools outstanding), Murphy, Rockwall and Rowlett. We had an exchange student from Germany live with us when I was in high school. He said he thought we would ride to school on horses!
