Has anyone out there done any mattress shopping lately? I’m in need of twin and full mattress and box spring sets. The problem is that if even if you write down the model names of certain brands, like Sealy or Serta, the model names change from store to store. These sets are for my children. I don’t want the absolute high end, but I don’t want junk either. Basically, I’m looking for the most bang for the buck. Hoping someone might have some advice. Thanks everyone!! :wave2:

Each store changes the model name so you have a hard time comparisson shopping. The easiest way is to find out the coil numbers, and ask as many questions as you can about the actual structure of the mattress. Like waht material is made of, warranty, etc.

Also pillow tops become uncomfortable sooner than the traditional mattress.

Hope this helps!

I know what you mean about the various names. Makes it extremely difficult to comparison shop. My DH and I just bought a Spring Air Back Supporter, had it delivered 9/27/065 and by the end of the year it was sagging. I wish I had my old 20yr. mattress back. Worst mattress ever. It is a pillow top, and they suggest rotating it every 2 weeks. Don't understand the point of that at all. I end up sleeping in my DH's "valley" and he in mine! They just keep getting deeper.

We have a Simmons and don't like it. We had a Serta Perfect Sleeper and LOVED it, my son now sleeps on it and its 16 years old. People comment on how comfortable it is when they sleep on it. We bought a new Serta for my other son and it is very comfortable.

Good luck, its tricky trying to find one you like.

One tip - Mattress prices are NEGOTIABLE. Don't pay the "sticker" price. Last time we shopped, we found a mattress we liked but I said that it was more than we were looking to spend. The salesman asked how much we were looking to spend and then dropped the price a couple hundred dollars.

Thanks to all of you so much. This entire process is enough to give me a headache. It seemed like a decision between a Serta or a Sealy, then I had this other guy (seemed rather dishonest) pushing a King Koil. I think I need to go back and actually discuss coil count and such with these people (we went to 4 places yesterday). They bank on the fact that most people no little about mattresses. I think we'll also steer clear of the pillow tops based on your replies. I'll also check out the Serta Perfect sleeper. Again, many thanks for your time.

keerymom, did you go to Metro by any chance? When we got our set there two years ago they also pushed hard for the King Koil models -- I remember the salesperson telling me outright that they are the "authorized" dealer for King Koil, whereas you wouldn't find that brand in Goldberg's or Raymour's, which are both Sealy dealers. I think Metro salespeople probably earn extra commission or something by selling a King Koil.

We had to buy a mattress last year. We bought a Sealy Posturepedic Preferred Series Fortune Firm and then I bought a 3" Memory Foam Mattress Topper from Overstock.com. It's super comfy! :cloud9:

And, I have also heard that getting a pillowtop mattress is a bad idea because they sag quickly.

We have two mattresses (ours and the guest bed) that are Sealy Posturepedic Plush (mid-range soft -- not too soft & not too hard). They are very comfortable and I would buy another one in a heartbeat. They aren't pillowtop, but are a little thicker than the average mattress. Also, the price wasn't too terrible on our pocketbook.

Costco often carries the Sealy Plush mattresses in the spring, but they go fast!

You're absolutely right! It was at Metro. It really didn't seem to compare either. I did happen to ask this guy about the coil count as well and he said that although the coil count was smaller, the King Koil had bigger coils?? I knew immediately I wouldn't be doing business there.

Just laughed when I saw this post. Finally, something that I probably know more about than anyone on the boards!!! I work in a mattress factory and would be happy to answer any questions about this topic. :thumbsup2

Just PM me with any questions. I would be happy to help.

btw, pillowtops are basically a "regular" mattress except the top quilted panel is attatched with a gussett giving it the pillowtop look. I wouldn't buy solely based on whether it was a pillowtop or not. Also, the one sided mattresses that are popular now are not worth the price if you ask me. You will usually pay more for them and you only get 1/2 of a mattress.

Anyway, let me know if I can help.

I know a while back there was a post about the heavenly beds, like the ones that are at the dolphin & swan. anyone else find more info on the heavenly beds ?

We purchased a Serta for ourselves last year. It is too small. It's a good inch to inch and a half smaller length and width wise than it should be. UGH! I will never buy a Serta again. Dh says it is the most comfortable mattress he has ever slept on. Go figure.

We purchased Sealy for our kids-a twin set and a full set. We purchased the same model but DD says hers is more firm than DS's. I don't know if it is because his mattress is bigger. They both love their Sealy sets.

We also negotiated the price.

We always buy our beds at Sams or Costco. They sell the sealy beds Ithink. My Mom had one in her Guest room and it was the MOst comfortable ever, everyone commented on it. Now my daughter has one in her room and all my guest comment on it!

Check out your club! It is the best price you will find! Even if you are not a memebr you can get a one day pass and pay a 5 or 10 % up charage and still get away much cheaper than other places.

Good Luck!

I have heard great things about this mattress. More info & if this is a place (beside a holel room) to sample would be great.

A few weeks ago I did see that Sears had a Serta full size matress set (matress and box spring) for roughly $600. I know they were advertising that matresses were 50 percent off, but I am not sure if the sale is still going on. I am not sure what other places charge, so I don't know if this is really a good deal or not.

I bought both of my daughter's sets through Costco. Love them! I would buy them again in a heart beat! Great quality and if you don't like them, you can return them no problem...

We went mattress shopping yesterday (we purchased a bed and it's to be delivered Wednesday). Anyhow, we checked out Tempurpedic, Restonic, and then some regular mattresses that were not 'brand' name. We want a medium firm mattress, as we have a less than a year old pillow top that makes us wake up feeling worse than when we went to bed. My son however loves the pillow top one so we'll be giving him our older queen bed (also less than a year old) and the mattress/boxsprings to go along with it.

Does anyone have one of the firm foam type beds? Do they hold up as well as a regular mattress? The reason we like the Restonic brand is that it seems firmer and it has the cover on it that is supposed to cut down on dust mites and allergens. We do not want a soft pillow top, but then we don't want a brick either LOL

We really thought we'd end up spending around 600.00 but once we started looking we noticed they were all around 1000 or more, and at the places we went all the dealers dropped the price by 100-200, with the 200.00 drop being because my husband had installed their air system a few years ago (still I think it should have been dropped more LOL)
