I was at the eye Doctors on Friday and during the exam he said Did you know you have a mole in the cornea of your eye.. ummm NO! This is a new spot that just came up, it was not there last year at my eye exam and as a result my vision has changed .75 in that eye and I have not had a prescription change in 15 years (I had had glasses since grade 6 LONG time ago) He said to come back in about 6 month to a 1 year to keep a watch on the mole and see if it changes.. This is a new Doctor, mine retired this year and he took over the practice. I am not sure if this is good or not that he is new in one way he will have all the latest info because he just graduated from school on the other hand he does not have the experience that my older Dr had. I did some of my own research and the only thing I can find is that it is early ocular melanoma. Nothing else talks about a mole just being there and it is normal everything talks about it being cancerous.

What tests should I ask for or is the wait and see approach a good one. I am concerned about this and really don't want eye cancer (who does right) . I just think that moles should not be on organs seems weird to me. I know that early prevention and catching things is the key here so I want to be on top of this waiting and seeing how things go is not me.

Does anyone have advice, experience or know of who to ask about this. Is there a blood test I can get that will check for cancer cells in my body.. eek.. what to do??

Was this an Optometrist that you saw? If so, I would definitely be contacting my GP and asking for a referral to an Ophthalmologist.

yes it was a regular optometrist. Thanks for your thoughts

I would think that even an optamologist would recognize if the mole is a problem or not, and when a referal would be warranted to an opthamologist.

I am working this weekend, and if the opthamologist is on, I can ask him about this.

I agree with Julie. Go to your family doctor and ask for a referral to an opthamaologist.

As someone who did have eye cancer, I want to assure you that every mole is NOT malignant. However, that needs to be determined by a doctor who specializes in eye tumors--called an ocular oncologist. If you live in a state that does not have one, try to see a retinal specialist or, at the very least, an ophthalmologist. You will need a dilated eye exam, and certain tests. I would not wait 6 months. Hopefully, you have a benign mole, but you want to have that established. For more info on all kinds of eye tumors, go to eyecancer.com Good luck!

Mousy I don't have any medical advise other than heading to your own GP and saying Hey I need this taken care of and I have some concerns ,,,,But I'm send some (((((((((((healing Hugs ))))))))))))) to you !!!:goodvibes

Thank you all, I phoned my Dr and she is going to refer to to a specialist so that this can be clarified better for me.

my husband is optometrist and his opinion is that some of the older doctors have less knowledge because of all the medical advances... so don't discount age to equate to lack of knowledge.

In this same situation, my husband would hope that this patient returns to him to ask for extra advice about it, expressing your concerns about if it might be something more. You can always ask for referral from optometrist to opthalmologist and in fact, your gp will have little knowledge about what this is and it would be better if optometrist prepares report and referral so opthalmologist knows what to look for right away.

Optometrists in Canada require a lot of medical training, so you should be able to consider his opinion as valuable. Go see him/her again and discuss your concerns.

Sending only the best of wishes to you. Please let us know how it goes.
