DS (6) loves all things Lego. There were quite a few new things that came out for 2009, right before Christmas...will more new items come out later in the year? He is so into Star Wars, and I bought all the little $10 sets for Christmas, now when "graduation" and his birthday etc come along, there are only expensive sets, and I do try to avoid the bigger sets.
Just wanted to know what experienced Lego lovers know...thanks !!

New Bionicles come out in the summer. There is this new line (new to me anyway) called Power Miners. My son is 9 - he and all of his friends love them. Some of those aren't too expensive. I can't remember if they release new Star Wars stuff more than once a year. Maybe someone else knows. You could also check the LEGO website.

If there is a Lego store in a mall near you, you can fill a tub with loose pieces that you need. They also have "mini-builds" where they do a little themed thing each month.

My ds 10 is a HUGE lego fan, he has some big sets, and we tell him that we only help him build them ONCE. If they break, it's up to him. He's taken some apart, and has made some AWESOME things with those sets, we have 2 HUGE bins in his room just full of legos! He loves them, and isn't too upset when the big ones break, he just builds stuff with his imagination! So I wouldn't worry about the big sets, build them once, and whatever happens, happens! Kids don't worry about stuff like that, they make do with their own skills!

Yes, they will come out with new sets. I often run into the Lego representative for our local Toys R Us (While shopping at Toys R Us.) Last year, she let me sneak a peek at her product catalog--filled with all product, released and yet to be released for the year! I felt like a kid in a candy store! They released new Star Wars and new Bionicles right before Christmas, and I assume they probably will again. Have you joined the Brickmaster club through the Lego magazine? I believe it is $40, and they send a new, exclusive small set along with a magazine every other month.

Also, Target often clearances Lego sets, so make sure to check that aisle every now and then.

I just bought my son two Star Wars Legos that I didn't see around Christmas time at the Lego Store. They were Star Wars the Clone Wars Legos and one was $9.99 and the other was $19.99. They were new to me! I have bought him all of the inexpensive ones I could find up until Christmas and these were two I hadn't seen anywhere. Check out lego.com. Also, I second the Brickmaster idea. For $40 you get a cool magazine and a small set of new legos every month or two.

DS does belong to the brickmasters club, we are anxiously awaiting the march/april gift right now...
DS would take every set there is, but I hate to buy something he likes if something he is going to love will come out later...
we don't live near a lego store, so we rely on the toy stores for our finds. I do check lego.com too, but hate to pay for shipping. We did get him the playable Death Star for Christmas, expensive, but worth it. He probably plays with it 6 days a week.

MY DS9 is way into the Star Wars Legos. We have all to little sets...and a few of the bigger ones from the Clone wars series...the ones in the $30-$50 range. (Yoda/Droid Tank and Mace Windu/Shuttle...and Asoka's and Anikin's Starfighters.) He has put them all together by himself...I help sort the parts mainly is all I do...and answer questions when parts look similar and the instructions aren't showing the right angle. He keeps all his instructions incase they fall apart...but mostly he plays with the mini-figures. It all started with the Magnet Set And a few Keychains we bought at DTD. I wished they still sold those Magnet Sets.

UPDATE!!!!
GOOD NEWS...after posting I went to the Lego site and they have 4 different Magnet Sets.
Young Anikin, Naboo Fighter Pilot, Darth Maul
Boba Fett, Leia in Slave Outfit, Empirial Guard
Chewbacca, Obi Wan, Darth Vader
Yoda, Mace Windu, Count Doku (these all appear to be of the Clone Wars Varity)

Maybe these would be a good idea for you.
