Taking a break from planning the next trip 02/07, and planning a kitchen renovation. We were quite settled on Corian till we heard of alot of ongoing maintenance etc. :confused3

So we figured we would come to the Disney experts for Kitchen advice, give us your horror stories or kudos for the different countertop choices. :teacher: :listen:

I am thinking about changing my countertops also and would like to hear more info, I was watching one of those home shows on HGTV the other night and I thought they said that as nice as granite looks, if anything did happen to it the whole thing would have to be replaced. With Corian, I thought they said it could be sanded out. I have formica now, and it is fairly matinence free but it is also ugly, at least mine is. It did bubble a little from hot plates but you really can't notice it. I don't know anything about laminates other then for flooring. :flower2:

Do you have to be Canadian to reply? :)

We have Silestone on our island. It's composite quartz, I think. It is very easy to take care of. I'm not sure why we chose this over granite. We were making so many decisions! It just caught our eye. We get many compliments on it.

The rest of our kitchen is a light color laminate. It's only ~2 years old and already has scratches and some very small stains (red wine, cranberry juice). However, because of the "leather" pattern on it, they are only noticable if you know where to look.

We didn't like corian much. I personally don't think it ages well, either style or looks-wise. This is probably a strange thing to say, but we've noticed similar materials in inexpensive motels and do not think it looks nicer than laminate.

formica = a brand of laminate countertops. :)

Good luck!

We went with laminate. I just tell the kids to be sure to use a cutting board on it. It's been in now for 18 months and it still looks new. It's called Colorado Slate.

We did Maple cupboards from Home Depot and bought our appliances from a Sears outlet store.

Don't forget...........

Stainless Steel is also becoming big for kitchens!

Good Luck with your decision!

We put granite in our kitchen 2 years ago. I love it! It is very easy to care for. The installers said you can do anything to it, including cut directly on it. The only caution I was told about was that while you can place hot pots from the stove directly on it, over time this will affect the sealer they put on it. In a restaurant setting for example that does this all the time, they would have to reseal their granite every few years. I was told in a home setting that you don't place direct heat on, the granite won't have to be resealed. The other caution was to not leave bottles of oil on your counter for extended periods of time (days not hours) as granite is a porous material and it will absorb any oil on the bottom of the bottle and leave a ring. I've also broken a plate on it that slipped from my hand when I was putting it away. Like tile floors, anything that is dropped on granite will probably break. But, all this said, I love my granite and personally feel it wears better than corian or laminate. Of course, for the cost you could afford to replace laminate counters every so often if they wear, but we didn't want the bother. We also have a breakfast bar in granite that could not be done in laminate as it is a custom shape.

We have granite. I think I abuse it but it still looks brand new. I have never treated it or done anything to it. It looks great after 5 years.

We are in the process of having a house built. One of the things I absolutely had to have was granite countertops in the kitchen. My builder offered solutions such as solid surface (Corian) and Silestone...even granite tiles....but I wanted the upscale look. I felt granite offers an investment in looks and durability.

I'd put my money in the granite. That's my opinion! :teeth:

We installed Silestone last December for our kitchen counters and I love it. It's tougher than granite, shiny, non-porous so you don't have to worry about oils, etc. It's not necessarily cheaper than granite, but I is supposed to be more durable. You can check it out at Home Depot.

My husband works for a granite company installing counter tops and such and we have granite for all our counter tops bathroom and kitchen and I love it. It is low maintenance and never needs to be sealed or anything. You can cut on it and put hot pots right on to it becasue it is a stone product. I would never go back to laminate or any immitation product. Also nothing is tougher than granite because it is a natural stone Something maybe equal though, If they are both stone products.

We had granite countertops installed 4 years ago and love the durablity and look. We chose a black tone called Uba Tuba and as I was checking into Shades of Green, I noticed their beautiful countertops were also Uba Tuba. I guess I really like it.

We had a Corian sink and it stained quite badly (it was white though). Stainless steel is very "cheffy", but does show any splash - in a hard water area you'd be wiping it every minute! And it scratches.

We will need a new kitchen in a year or two, so this is very interesting!

Of course, Granite is very heavy and very expensive - it does look lovely though. :goodvibes

As someone who works with Stainless Steal let me just say that I hate them. Viciously. Have to Dry them after you wipe them down or they look dirty. They scratch super easy. I suggest watchying some TLC or HGTV for ideas. Laminate is cheap so not a hardship to replace if neccsary but I've seen them use Deck Flooring product for a stone countertop once an I thought it was gorgeous. Use something unusual and you're considered creative not cheap. :cool1:

that some stainless fridges won't hold magnets?

We were looking - kitchen redo coming up for us as well..arrggh! - and the sales guy asked if we had a "kitchen gallery"?

Huh? :confused3

That is, do we hang our kids projects, note, etc, on the fridge?
Yep::yes::

Just an FYI!:)

...Love granite, tile, all the fun stuff...but would buy laminate - that way, when I want to change it in 5 or 6 years and still go to WDW, we can!!;)

Have fun!

Another vote for granite-we've three older teens and for the abuse that counter takes from them it still looks great after two years.

I'm having granite put into my bathrooms now.

Another vote for granite. We had it in our house in Atlanta and loved it.
Didn't put it in our house here - and wish we would have.
Go with granite, you won't be sorry.

I'm thinking of doing my kitchen next year - I want to replace the countertops and add a peninsula. Would love to have granite but I am wondering what it would cost. Is it priced per square metre?

Teresa

We just costed Granite per square foot CAD anywhere from 65 to 105 installed. Our problem is the maximum length for 1 piece is about 104 inches our counter is 113, hate to have a 9 inch seam. :confused3

By the way you pay for your sink cut out but you get to take it home?

Thanks for the picture, DW loves it! Same door style we have picked now she is questioning her lighter green paint color. ( thanks alot! )

Right now we are leaning toward the laminate and the extra Disney trip, this is the most logical argument we have found so far.

Thanks to all for your input :teacher: We appreciate all of your comments.

This February in Manitobe a kitchen reno! Next February Disney at the Poly! :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc
