OT- Just got back from the DR- my 6 yr old has MONO

That's how young kids get it and a lot of older ones too - share a sip of pop, drink out of the same cup, kids on team sports who drink from the same water bottle or cup. That sort of thing.

Its really way too easy. This week has been hard- my kids usually play together all day and I never realized how easy it was to share these germs. I pretty much quarantined her to my bed. My husband cant get it again and I have been super careful.

I hear ya! We have very young kids (4.5, 3, 17months) we are on constant cup patrol.::cop: Do you know how hard it is to make sure they don't drink out of the same cup or share whatever food they are eating? Not to mention that they are very affectionate so they are always hugging and mushing each other. We try the best we can but it is impossible. I hope we get the test results today.

So sorry to hear about your little girl! I had mono as a teenager and missed 3 months of school. The spleen enlargement was tremendous! Younger kids do tend to bounce back more quickly, but when you send her back to school ease her into it. Start with a half day for a week, especially if she has been in bed or in a stroller a lot before she goes back. The physical demands of school - even just sitting up at the desk - all day can be exhausting for someone who has been "gelling" out for a while.

A child on my son's swim team has mono - we are all waiting to see who's next. The mom says that she was told to keep him out of school for a week but resume regular practices/meets as soon as he was without fever. Personally, I think it's nuts. The child looks completely exhausted. The nurse in me wants to go palpate his spleen and check his throat. I'm betting his mom wouldn't appreciate that, though;) .

As for "cup patrol" - it's not a bad idea to switch to plastic/paper cups and plates for the infected person only. That way there is no confusion.

Good luck. If she likes to read, I bet she would love books on tape. Check out the local library for some good titles. A friend of mine rented a keyboard for her daughter to play on while in bed with mono a couple of years ago. It was a hit! Hope she's feeling better soon!

Thank you for the thoughts! I did go buy her a bright pink cup that has been dubbed the Sick Cup so no one will mistakenly drink from it. I called her dance teacher today- she takes Ballet on Mondays and Jazz & Tap on Wednesdays- and her recital is May 25th- and the Dr said no activities for a full month. Her teacher was really good about it and suggested she can come sit and watch her class when she is feeling more up to it. That made my day- I was a little worried about that. I'm surprised the dr let that kid back to swimming in only a week!

Well we are still waiting for all the blood tests to come back. So far ds's liver and kidney functions are good etc. so it is not indicitive of mono but the actual mono test did not come back yet so it is still a possibility. He is still vomitting at least 1-2 times per day. It has been 12 days of this. I feel so bad for him. I spoke to the doctor tonight and as soon as the tests come back tomorrow we are going in for a visit. I really wish they could give me some kind of diagnosis so we can help him feel better.:sad1:

Thats got to be worse than not knowing...the poor kid. :grouphug:

My son also had mono. Besides the TLC, my Dr. recommended drinking green tea and eating a very healthy diet. My son would drink the green tea iced with honey (Arizonia and Snapple style) and he drank lots of it. Lots of water too. The Doctor believed that whenever the spleen, liver and kidneys are involved that drinking lots of fluids was very important. He also ate very healthy-lots of fruits and veggies, yogurt etc. After the first week or so, he was much better. I am sending prayers for a speedy recovery and a wonderful trip.:goodvibes :goodvibes

Thanks for the thoughts- this is the first time I have heard of the green tea thing- but you always hear how good the stuff in it is for you- so I guess that would make sense, wouldnt it? Thanks!

Okay-no mono here. His thyroid is a little off but we are going to test again in a month. It was nothing bad, just a little off. So far today we have no vomitted. If he does not vomit tonight he will get to go to school tomorrow. He cannot wait! Of course he only has 2 days before Easter break!:rotfl: I hope your daughter is feeling better.
