OT - Is this a scam?

When we bought new phones, we changed our cell phone numbers to the local area code. When I tried to update my phone number to my gmail account which is used here, I forgot the password, so I couldn’t verify it was me. So I Googled how to contact a live person. The “support” group showed two phone numbers. When I called to update my phone number, I was told it would cost me $100!!! Anyone heard of this? Sounds like a scam to me. I have not been able to access my Google account since September 19.

Did more research - the number I called (888) 570-1575, which is listed so many times and appears to be legitimate, is definitely a scam. 😡. Fortunately, I followed my instinct and told them forget it. 😏

So who were you attempting to call? Google/Gmail or your cell phone carrier?

Most cell phone carriers in the US can be contacted by dialing 611 on your phone (or sometimes *611).

I’d be surprised if there’s a phone number to contact Gmail.

You should be able to just reset your password. Once you have done so, make sure you go into Gmail settings and enter a secondary email you can use to get access to your Gmail account if necessary.

It‘s always a good idea to make sure you can access any linked accounts before going ahead with disconnecting the associated phone number. Just in case you need to get a code or whatnot or use 2 factor authentication. Once you know you can get in, then go ahead and change your number.

Start on this page at Google.com (remember that Google owns Gmail - the "G" in Gmail stands for Google)

Google Account Help

Go down to "Account Recovery" and click on "How to recover your Google Account or Gmail".

Stay on pages where the URL ends in Google.com. If it ends in anything else (for example: googlecom.search.xx) then stop, close out your browser completely, and start over again at Google.com

Didn’t work. 😒

Just realized... If you can log in to the DIS, and see the Boards, *AND* see my PM's to you...

... let's just have you change your email address from here!!! (I know - it still doesn't give you access to the Gmail account itself, but it solves this one part here at the DISBoards)

Go up to the top of the page, and click on your little picture that is just to the left of your Messages, your Notifications (looks like the little bell) and the SEARCH icon. Click on your icon and it should show your username and directly under that, the Gmail account.

Just change that to an email account that you *can* access. You will need your password for the DISBoards to complete this step.

Once you have entered the new email address, and your current DISBoards password, it will send you 2 emails. The first one goes to the new address you changed to, telling you that hey, you changed your email address, and to verify that, please click here on this handy-dandy button.

The second email goes to your old Gmail account that you can't access, and basically says hey... so you changed your email, just letting you know in case you didn't want that to happen.

And then you can have notifications from the DISBoards sent to your email account again and they should work fine.

And we will continue to work together in private messages to see if we can get your Gmail account working again, regardless. :-)

Turned out the email was from a long time ago. 🤣. Anyway, I have updated to the new one I created. 👍. Thanks for your help.

We’ve had visitors from Oregon and doctor appointments and have been very busy this past week. That’s why I couldn’t respond sooner. In 2 hours we’re leaving to play cards with friends. Then this Monday, a dental appointment to replace a broken crown. Think I’ll take a short nap. So exhausted 🥱

Be sure to take a moment for yourself!

And glad to hear that you got your email updated! Yay! :-)
