OT - How much do kids grow from 1-2 years?

Howdy!

Even though my son is 16 months old now I still feel like I have no clue most days. We're heading back to the world this October and he'll be 23 months old and I know it is a stretch but I would love it if he could ride Goofy's Barnstormer. I WON'T take him if he isn't 36" without shoes b/c he is our "king" and I would never forgive myself if something happened b/c I wanted him to go on a ride but I can always dream. Right now he is 31 and 3/4" inches and has been for a couple of months so I'm pretty sure he isn't going to grow 4 inches in 7 months but I honestly have no clue how fast kids grow. So I guess my question is not only for the ride but also clothes - I've already seen some cute summer clothes but I just have no idea if he'll go through another growth spurt soon! Any experience would be appreciated!

You really have no clue.

DS#1 the first two years flew through sizes. At 12 months he wore an 18m, at 15m he wore 2T, at 24 months he wore 4T. DS#2 at 12 months wore a 9m, at 15 months he wore a 12m, at 18 months he wore 24 month, at 24 months we wore a 2T and at 3 years wears a 2T. DS#3 is 18 months now and wears an 18m.

And, then, of course, it varies by brand. My kids can wear Oshgosh sizes much longer; DS#3 is wearing a 12 month in Oshgosh today and it fits fine, but most every other brand is way too small at 12 months. Then he has another outfit that he wore yesterday that was actually a 24 month. All my kids tend to wear a size up in that brand.

I always bought simply as I had a need. I found that even though I couldn't take advantage of the sales as much, I ended up spending less money in the long run.It wasn't until DS#1 hit 4 that I was able to start predicting his sizes. DS#2 barely grows, but hits a growth spurt once a year (always a different time of year ) that moves him 2-3 sizes in 2-3 months, so I have a hard time predicting his sizes too. I do have hand-me-downs to help me get by. DS#3 almost totally wears all hand-me-downs so I don't even bother unless he has an immediate need for something.

I too would like to add that you never have a clue on when they will take another spurt. Children grow a lot during the first year, and then they usually slow down a bit compared to the first year. I wouldn't want to count on four inches in 7 months. As far as clothing, a lot of that depends on what he is wearing now. For example if he is wearing 12 months and they fit him good, IMO there would be a good chance that he could wear 24 months in 7 months. With the exception of my middle child, my kids have been bigger than most. I know that its hard to figure out, but until your there, I don't know how to predict too much. But I will add this, our first trip my baby was 27 months, and even though he couldn't ride much, he had a ball with seeing all of the characters.

My DD is about 28 months and she is the average height for her age. She is just about 36 inches. I thought the Goofy Barnstormer was one they could ride with a parent. maybe I'm wrong, I have read too much to retain lately! It just depends on th child. She really hasn't grown much over the last 6 months. A year ago she was just over 31 inches. So basically it has taken her a year to grow almost 3 1.2 inches. And she has only gained about 4 or 5 lbs too.

I gave up on guessing his sizes. I have a 35.5", 25 pound, almost two year old. He just recenty started outgrowing his 24 month pants in length but we're finding 2T won't stay on his teeny waist. Once he potty trains and no longer has the support of diapers, I don't know how we'll keep pants on him!

I forget his height at 1 year, but it was in the 90th percentile for boys - probably 31-32".

At 2 years 3months my dd was tall enough for it but wouldn't go one with her "thin" uncle and wanted me or daddy and we are bigger and I was way to scared I wouldn't fit. Gosh I plan to be avearge size for our next trip to not worry about this.

She has since been on little carnival roller coasters and loves them so I know she will love it when we go back. Might try to hold off until she is 42"(I think then she'd be able to ride just about everything) or 5 or really really close, but most likely will 'have' to wait for financial reasons even though my dad lives less than a hour from WDW and we can stay for free. Airfare isn't cheap.

Its really hard to guess. But then also my dd was always in the 95% or off the charts on height.


And we also have the tiny waist problem and YES it did get worse for awhile after she was out of diapers. But she is starting bulk up a bit and finally hit 35 lbs on good days. Up from making 32 on a good day.

Had the same problem (although my DS 4 is skinny AND short...but I have found that a lot of toddler boy pants come with adjustable waistbands (on the inside). Just pull the elastic band to where you need, and there are buttons to hold them in place. The pants that we have found them in run the gamut from cheap (target store brand, old navy) to expensive (gymboree, baby gap). Interestingly, the only pants that fit him without an inner adjustable waistband were the Kohl's department store store brand. I forget the name, but they were cut very slim (not the wide legged fashion that is so common these days).

The 2T pants we just started sticking him in are adjustable, on the tightest setting. I've actually seen some belts online that use magnets so he can get them unfastened quickly at the potty. Either that or I'm getting him suspenders!

My kids are all exteremly thin for there heights. What we do is buy slims (where available) and adjustable waistes (thank goodness now a lot of brands have them, four years ago it was only the most expensive & slim pickin's!), and then we still tend to take them to a tailor many times. They just make the waistes more adjustable (so as we hand them down...) and it doesn't cost a whole lot. Pre-potty training, lets just say my oldest wore a lot of overalls and shortalls.

I had a feeling it was a stretch to guess how tall he would be in 7 months but I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with a skinny kid. He has the height for some 18 month pants but the fall down on him b/c the waist is too big. At Christmas we had to get a safety pin to take in his pants 2 inches to keep them up!
