OT: Homeschooling (religoius) related -- ? regarding devotionals--

quick question---didn't want it to get lost on the thread...

what's a deviotional? Sad to say I don't know what one is. We are in a Christian homeschooling group and I know several families that start their day with devotionals and then studies. I do not know if this is the "religion" part of their curriculum. I'm a minority in the bunch--a Catholic. So I'm afraid to ask...so thought--hey the DIS is a safe place .


Mine are 5 & 2--so not even sure they'd get what devotionals is.

Generally speaking its a prayer.

The "defination" would probably read something more like "abbreviated religious service". I have a nice book of devotionals for moms that I read in the am and I just got my dd a great one for teens. I imagine they have something perfect for the preschool set that you could read together in the morning. It is a great way to get the day started - homeschooled or otherwise!

We just do grace before breakfast but I imagine some would call that a "devotional".

We are a Christian homeschooling family. We also begin our school day with a devotional - for us it includes reading a passage of Scripture and then using a story or small activity that relates it to our everyday life. We also include a prayer. There are a lot of wonderful devotional books out there written for specific age groups. It is a great way to start the day! God Bless!

I will check my stash--we already are working on bible stories and have an activity associated with that....but I might have something to supplement that.

I just want to say that I give you parents a lot of credit for homeschooling your children. It is not for me but I have such respect for the parents who take the time and the effort.

I think a devotional is a prayer, followed by a scripture passage and then a story relating to it that inspires you to greater depths of faith. I am a catholic homeschool teacher also. I was raised baptist though, so we did several devotionals growing up. Good luck. There are several great books out there for devotionals or you can just let God direct you.

I went to catholic school and we would pray each day at the start of the classes. I remember in our English class in Highschool, our daily prayer was this: "Dear God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference". Then we sat in our places and started the day´s work.

Hi! I don't homeschool but am a Sunday School teacher and maybe can answer your question... my child goes to a Christian private school where they also start each day off with a devotional.

A devotional can be many things...

A prayer, a reading (from Bible, devotional book, a Christian or faith based story book, e-mail from internet,etc., etc.), a silent time or a combination of these things and many others. The purpose is to take a minute out of our hectic lives to focus our attention on God. Different people do this in different ways. For kids, there are many great devotional books out there with daily devotionals and many free web resources (just type in Sunday School lessons on any internet search engine!)
