My family and I cancelled our Disney trip this year due to finances (not really bad, but not stable enough that I felt comfortable enough going anyway). Instead, we are taking a road-trip to see some friends of ours 1100 miles away. Most of it is interstate driving, nothing too terrible except the distance and we plan on breaking it up into 2 days. In an effort to pacify my husband, I agreed to stay in a hotel instead of staying with our friends in their home (about $400-$500). They live in base-housing and they are also a family of 4. 4 adults and 4 kids in a small 3-bedroom is a tight squeeze.

We also thought of renting a vehicle for the drive. My vehicle is a 2003 Trailblazer with almost 100,000 miles on it, but we haven't had any major problems with it........yet. I say yet, because I believe in Murphy's Law. I need it to last me at least until next August when I start teaching. My husband drives an Acura TSX, which is rather small (equivalent to a Civic) for those of you who aren't familiar with them. I like to travel with an ice chest for food and a small goody bag of things for the kids to do, i.e. coloring books, CD and DVD players, Nintendos, etc. His car has low miles, brand new tires, and dreamy gas mileage. He is also comfortable in his car and normally loves to drive it.

Okay. I'm thinking, in an effort to keep costs down, maybe we should skip the rental since we will be shelling out some dough for a hotel. He doesn't want to take his car because all of a sudden, he needs "room when he travels". Hmm, first I've heard of it, but okay. I'm thinking we are tempting fate if we take mine. I really don't want to shell out $300 or $400 on a rental though.

What should I do? Do I push my luck with my truck, lean on him to take his, or bite the bullet and rent a car? Or should I tell him, suck it up on the hotel and then we'll rent a car?
