Hello :)

Just took both of my dd's earrings out as they have been in now for about 10 or 12 weeks. I can't say I was perfect at remembering to clean them every single day and turn them. I did do it, but not daily. Those earrings are a real bugger to take out!!! It hurt them when I did it!

Older dd wasn't too bad, but had a bit of blood on the back of one. Her new earrings went in fine and no problems

Younger dd's were awful take out. When I did they bled and had gunk in them too. She screamed bloody murder (before I even touched her head!!). So anyways, now I've cleaned them and put polysporin on them, but will I get earrings in again? Should I try? Should I let them grow over and forget about it?? I doubt she'll let me near her ears again now.

I am feeling really bad that I didnt' keep them better than I did. I thought I was doing ok with it because they never looked bad and seemed to turn ok. Poor kiddo. We just had bought new earrings for both of them to switch to so I doubt now that she'll want them in :(.

Any suggestions to help with this???

Thanks ...
KErri

My DD ears did this twice. The first time they were done somehow the back was not secure it came out overnight. Had to go back the next day and have redone----fastforward about 2 months. We cleaned them about every two days--- she screamed and screamed --ear was inflamed and tons of gook came out and bled for a while. She would not let me put it back in. We let them gorw over and a year later tried again. The day we put new ones in it started over--that night the swelling started. SHe let them grow over again--no earrings for us!

my DD has the same issue but she takes care of her ears really well. She's just VERY senstive to the earrings and it produces junk constantly. Some people just cannot have earrings in w/o issues. My ears started being yucky with earrings shortly after having DD so I think something happened when I was pregnant with her that just altered my body's acceptance of metal.

I have found buying her hypo-allergenic earrings helps a lot. I know Claire's sells them.

Ny DD had similar issues, although it's been 8 year so exact memories are a little fuzzy. I DO know that she could only wear the original earrings for a couple of years, and after that only gold- couldn't wear hypoallergenic or surgical steel or anything. After 5 or 6 years she could finally swap to the silver ones, or "cheap" earrings from places like Claire's. Doctor said when little kids have their ears pierced it frequently takes them a long time to heal up, and even longer still to not be reactive to different metals.

This just happened to my DD 6 about 3 weeks ago. She had the same pair of earrings in for a few months and we never gave it any thought (she's had her ears pierced for 1.5 years). One nite she said "mommy, my ear feels a little funny". So I looked, and the back of the earring (the metal butterfly type of clasp) was EMBEDDED in her ear.

I made her get on the bed, got out the ear antiseptic and got to work. It was totally gross. The clasp had been pushed too tightly and part of the front was a cylinder shape and was actually stretching out her earring hole. I finally got it out and there was a bit of a gaping wound. There was a little bit of gunky pus, BUT it was not swollen and didn't appear to be infected.

I put a bandaid over it and got some peroxide. Everywhere I checked online said to use peroxide. If you put that on there a couple times a day, it will "fizz" and help get some of that gunk out - AND it doesn't hurt, which is a plus. It was really tricky to get the earrings out and I thought the hole would NEVER be the same. The back of the hole had an X shape to it from where the clasp had been embedded.

It was a judgment call on my part to take her to the doctor and I decided NOT to. I took good care of it 2x a day and it healed VERY quickly. Every so often, I would stick an earring post through to see if there was still a hole and there WAS. The hole shrunk back down to normal size and now it looks totally normal.

She has some 14k gold earrings & that is what we put in - we twist them EVERY day without fail and check the clasp to make sure it doesn't happen again.

I felt soooooo very guilty for this happening, but it is fairly common and don't beat yourself up about it. We can't keep any eye on every single thing and at a certain point need to be held accountable for taking responsibility for things (maybe not possible depending on the age of your daughter!).

If you think the earlobe is swollen and red, I'd definitely recommend taking her to the doctor. Let us know how things go!

Yes, peroxide GOOD. We use it on everything that gets cut around here and haven't had any infection problems in years.

I rarely wear earrings anymore, but when I do, I dip the earrings (or just the posts, if it's something like my pearl posts) in peroxide; cuts down the itchy red ear factor I tend to get with earrings nowadays!

Well they just got home from their grandparents house and are eating supper. My oldest is ok, but hesitant for me to touch the one that was a bit bloody, but I'm going to clean it again tonight. I have the peroxide too!!

As for younger dd (5) she isn't so sure about trying to put her new dolphin earrings in. I'm tempted to try as I know if I don't they will be too scabby to try it again and will grow over. She originally told me she is waiting until she is 13, but then I reminded her she wouldn't have any earrings at all until then she decided to think about it. So we may try (am doubting this highly at the moment!!). lol

Will let you know how it grows. Thanks for the suggestions and similar experiences. I felt so bad that she had a lot of pain, but obviously with all the blood they aren't really healed well. And I do believe she likely has sensitive ears to earrings, but the ones they had put in originally were good earrings. Today we bought 10k gold ones. I can only wear gold, so both of them are likely the same.

My mom has worn clips for years and has suffered with allergy to the metal in jewlry. Recently she decided she wanted to get her ears pierced and she was told that if you dip the earring post in neosporin before putting it in your ear it helps. So far she has had no reaction and she hasn't been wearing non allergenic earrings. That said both me and my dd have the same problem my dd had her ears pierced when she was 3 and we finally let them close over at 5 since she was constantly getting crusty junk coming out her ears even with some of the hypo allergenic earrings and she just kept messing with her ears so we called it quits. She does think she wants to maybe get them done again when she gets older but we will have to see. Good luck. :goodvibes

I can't wear earrings at all. I have some nice gold ones that my husband bought me a few years ago, and one ear is fine, but the other gets red and itchy within a short time of putting the earring in. I wear them so infrequently that the back always seems to grow over (the front of my ear is fine) so everytime I try to wear them it's like getting my ears pierced all over again! As much as I like the earrings, I have finally just given up.

Unless the posts are sterling silver, I can't wear earrings. The little cheapy stuff breaks me out and causes a nasty infection.

Go find your girls earrings with sterling silver posts or something hypoallergenic if you plan on putting earrings back in now. If you plan on letting them close up to re do them later, research and see if you can have them pierced with sterling silver posts or hypoallergenic posts.

The exact same thing happened with my DD and her starter earrings. It was a combination of 2 things...one, even though we did clean them they got a little crust and blood which I think is normal when you were the starter earrings for so many weeks and two, those starter earrings were SOOO hard to get out...I had to yank and pull and then when DD saw the blood she freaked out. I think she was more scared than hurt. Of course then she was afraid to get new earrings in but after about an hour DH convinced her it would be alright. To tell you the truth she is still a little worried every time we change her earrings...but we do it a lot more often now and never have trouble with blood and gunk. So if I were you I would give it a shot...regular earrings are a lot easier to take out then the starter ones. so you should not have that problem again.

Same thing happened here! My dd always asks me if the back is on tight or if changing the earrings are going to hurt her. We always use hypo allergenic earrings and/or sterling silver. I had sensitive ears with my earrings as a kid so I just use them with her to prevent problems. Right now I probably clean the ears every few days and always put the earrings in the antiseptic/alcohol product from claires before putting the new earrings in. We really haven't had any problems since the first time taking them out.
