We're sitting here trying to book a flight to Vegas. We've decided that flying out of Buffalo or Detroit is the way to go pricewise. We also need a direct flight due to dh's motion sickness and fear of flying. We've looked up NWA and Southwest and although the prices are good, the times are just terrible for getting back to work (ie. arrive home at 5am and have to go back to work by 8am).

Are there any other airlines we should be considering??? I'm such a newbie at flying from Detroit and Buffalo. Any help would be VERY much appreciated!!

Have a look at Kayak.com and put in either route...might help point you in the right direction? Did you consider Westjet? Might be out of the ballpark, but you never know!

Southwest, Jet Blue, Air Tran, Spirit are some of the discount carriers at some of the US airports you're looking at.

Depending where you are and if you can't get a the fare or dates you want, look at consider Pittsburgh, Flint, Toledo, Rochester or Cleveland.

Thank you both sooooo much for your help.

We've gone to all the airlines you mentioned, and so far Spirit is by far the winner. We could fly to Las Vegas (2 adults) for $426USD total. It's the best price AND best times....

I have no experience with this airline. Does anyone have any experience they could share???

I have not flown with them but my friend has a couple of times and thought they were good! She upgraded to Biz class (Or whatever it is called) for some ridiculous amt and all went well!

Have fun!

We have used Spirit for our last three or four trips out of Detroit - a couple to Orlando and one to Los Angeles. We have never had (knock on wood) a serious problem with flight delays or cancellations. You have to pay for checked baggage and snacks, but even with the baggage charge they still tend to have better fares when you can get a sale. We have a flight booked in June to Orlando and I was able to get 2 RT tickets for US$240 all inclusive. Since then, in my best Monk-like obsessive-compulsive manner I've checked the Spirit web site daily and the next best price I've seen has been around $380.

Spirit flies out of the older. grungy Smith terminal at DTW, but that's slated to be closed by the fall and replaced with the brand new North Terminal. So depending on when you're travelling you may get the chance to use the new terminal.

Spirit has an all-Airbus fleet, mostly A319s. The newer planes are very nice, but sometimes the cleaning by the ground crews leaves a little to be desired. Still, I figure that for what I'm paying I can handle 3 or 4 hours in one of their planes.

We lucked out 3 years ago when we booked BUF to LAS on Delta.
Ordinarily I would never use them but for the dates we went (beginning of June) it was $262 return for both of us including taxes. I know this is not the norm ,but you could just as easily catch a deal like this if you are lucky enough to look at the right time. In our case it was booked in March through Travelocity.com (not .ca.....the deal was not available through the Canadian site0
