OT: Having my tubes tied

Why did you sign up for major abdominal surgery when he can get a vasectomy in 10 mins? AGH. This makes me want to jump through the comp. screen. But, obviously to each his own. Good luck.

Do I wish my DH did a vasectomy? Yes. Do I think he was a little selfish for not? Yes, perhaps. :rolleyes1 However, I don't think a tubal ligation is as risky as some may think. It is minimally invasive- it's outpatient surgery. The worst part is the anesthesia, I guess.[/QUOTE]

I agree with your answers 100 % This was a choice WE both made. I really don't mind the surgery. I'm just a little scared of being put under. The only surgery I ever had was my C/S back in 1996. I only had an epidural with that. Thank god for pain meds!!! :worship:

I wonder why its so hard for people to understand that? I have the right to step up to the plate too.

I had mine done an hour after my 3rd DDs birth with no additional problems for a normal delievery. :goodvibes

Have you thought about having the Essure put in instead?

I want to echo this. Seriously, look into it. I did. It is relatively noninvasive and you certainly will not have pain after except for a few hours of cramps. You are not under anesthesia at all!

DH had 2 vasectomies, because the first one didn't work:scared1: . I have had GFs who had their tubes tied and I thought their surgery was more invasive than DHs quick procedure. There is a risk any time general anesthesia is administered and all DH had was a valium.

I think it's fine for you to step up to the plate. If you are nervous about the anesthesia though, that is a valid concern for you to discuss with him. If his family issues are truly valid with vasectomies, then you are the one to get your tubes tied naturally. I hope you have an easy recovery.

If anesthesia is your issue, look into the essure procedure. It's permanent too.

This is what we did after we decided not to have any more children. I would have to say it is much easier for your DH (but also agree there is some pain involved--well more soreness then pain). I will admit though, I had them knock me out for the procedure. It is usually done with just a local, but I wasn't comfortable with the Doc chasing me all over the table--lol. Good luck with whatever you decide.

DH had a V after we had my DS and it really was not that bad for him. I wouldn't want to go through the surgery of having my tubes tied when he could just do an outpatient procedure with some pain and discomfort... Been there done that with labor and delivery!

Good luck with everything:) I would talk to DH about the V word again. Some guys just get too freaked out by it though. Guess I don't blame them but childbirth isn't any picnic in the grass either.

I agree with the people who have said they can't understand why a husband would want his wife to under go invasive surgery when he could have a very minor office procedure to accomplish the same thing.

I carried the kids for 9 months and although he was there for the delivery at my side....come on...that pain was all mine. I did my share so the vasectomy was the least he could do!

My DH had a vacetomy and he was so surprised how easy it was. (This was almost 8 years ago.) He was back to work within a couple hours. I brought him home planning to take care of him and right away he said he wanted to go to work. I lost the argument and drove him to work. He missed just the morning it was very simple. I have to say it was the best thing he did for our relationship. I am not necessarily posting this for the OP, if you have made up your mind it is yours to make, but for anyone reading this and wweighing both options. I had 3 c-sections and additional abdomonal surgeries for endometrosis and wanted to take care of him after his surgery the way he did me, but he didn't need it at all.

Really uncalled for.

By the way it's NOT major abdominal surgery. It's minimally invasive and it is NOT considered major. It's outpatient.

Enough of the personal attacks.

a very personal choice for you to make, all we can do is share our stories.
I had my tubes done in 2000 the day after I had DS, it was the worse pain I had ever experienced!!!! I have a very high threshold for pain too!
I gave birth twice with no drugs. I would rather give birth than go to that extreme measure. Like the saying goes...if I knew then what I know now.

My sister just had the Essure(SP) done in November. she was in and out within 25 min..princess:

p.s. I was not put to sleep...had an epidural

Congratulations on taking this very important step to insure your health and take responsibility for your own fertility. It's too bad your husband isn't a good candidate for a snip, but you deserve a world of credit for doing this for both of you.

I had mine on a Thursday, took just one pain pill, took it easy on the weekend and was back to work on Monday. It still took a couple of weeks before I was truly back to myself (exercising, lifting, all the normal stuff). I'd recommend the slash-n-burn instead of the clips, as it's been proven safer.

Good luck to you, and again, big congrats!!!

I had the Essure procedure done. In case your not familar with that, the doctor inserts a metal spring into your tube (Yes, you have to go through "there" to get to your tubes)Once the spring is in place, your body will grow scar tissue around it causing your tubes to become blocked. It took maybe 30 minutes for the whole thing. My DH drove me home. I had some cramps that were like a period. You have to go back 3 months later to have an xray done to make sure your tubes have become blocked so no "fun time" until after that.

I hope your surgery goes well.

Ok, so my husband and I have agreed that we do not want anymore kids and I am having my tubes tied at the end of March. I know I will have to be put under for the surgery. I am a bit scared of that but what I really want to know is will I have much pain and for how long?

Surgery is schedule for a Thursday and I will be able to go back to work on Monday.

Thanks
Donna

If they are doing it laproscopically the pain will be more from filling you with gas and once that passes you will feel okay. Watch the heavy lifting still but when I had mine done (4 weeks after my youngest dd was born) I had no rpoblems after the first couple of days. Good luck.

I had mine tied a few years ago. Just a warning the pressure for your husband to have surgery instead will not stop here. I was being prepped and they were telling my dh (who I hadn't even married yet) that he should be doing it instead!!

This has always got me thinking about what happens if the couple separates?? The woman then comes into the risk of becoming pregnant again or having to go onto BC again with a new man since she never had her tubes tied while the hubby doesn't have to worry about more kids with the new woman.

While I was in surgery they found a cyst the size of a grapefruit so they really did a "second" surgery. Even so I was only out for about 4 days. Just take that weekend to relax and listen to your body on Monday morning.

I am so glad they found the cyst when doing surgery and it did not cause you more serious problems.

Umm, a tubal is NOT major abdominal surgery. It is now done laproscopically and not at all that bad. Had she said she was having a Hysterectomy than i could possibly see such a leap but heck even hysts can be done laproscopically or other ways. And FTR, I had a "major abdominal surgery" and I so do not regret it one bit. :rotfl:

I haven't had a tubal, but my sister had Essure when it was being tested and it has worked for 7 years now. She said she had some carmping but nothing bad and was not put under at all.

We are done as well and my DH had a vasectomy. Much quick recovery and cheaper. We paid a $20 office visit co-pay.

We're also getting a vasectomy, well at least DH is. I had a "similar" experiece this past year when I became preggo with an IUD in, and to make a long story short, I had an ectopic pregnancy and lost a fallopian tube. All I can say is that I was in MAJOR pain for the first 48hrs. It was so painful to walk and pee, and it was done by laparoscopy.
I told my husband that it was his turn now...I was done!! I had been through 2 pregnancies, one ectopic pregnancy, a surgery and lost a tube?? I am sorry, he HAD to take one for the team, and I'm happy to say that when I was being wheeled in to surgery that it "hit" him. And he is voluntarily getting a vasectomy.

But I do believe that while expressing our opinions and personal stories, we need to understand that it is a personal decision. My SIL is getting her tubes tied right after her C-section this year, and that was her choice, and I respect it.

So, back to the original question...you WILL have gas and pain because of the air in the stomach. I was on narcotics and 800mg. of ibuprofin for a week after surgery. Good luck!:thumbsup2

Good post. I think some must have an old concept of the TL surgery. I think I had less than a 1 inch incision for mine.

I don't disagree that it is not 'major' surgery, however, talk to your doctor - a TL still has WAY more risk (although the risk still remains low) than a vascectomy. That is why doctors push the V's more. Less risk = less risk of complication for their patient.
