OT- Has anyone ever camped at Stone Mountain?

We have family in Atlanta and we are thinking of camping for a few nights at Stone Mountain Park in Georgia. Has anyone ever camped here? If so, care to share your experience?

Ive never camped there...but my wife and I went to the laser show back in the 80s at the park...and what I can remember of it(it was the 80s, and we were young and..."experimental") it was a beautiful park....and the laser show, if they still do that, was phenomenal!!!....or maybe it was all a halucination??? just kidding around......kinda.

My in-laws camped there last year. They really loved it. I think we are going to visit the campground soon. I lived in Atlanta for awhile and I enjoyed the park and the lazer show. I will try to find some pictures.

My parents were there just this last Labor Day Weekend and enjoyed it. It think Tent Camping Mom has been there also. I had hoped to spend a night there next month, but they have a two-night minimum.

Yes, we have camped there during two of their busiest times (Memorial Day Weekend and Labor Day Weekend) and we loved it so much we purchased annual passes and we plan to camp at least twice each year. Also, Government/Military get a good discount, 20%.

The sites can be a good walk to the comfort stations so prepare for that when you look at their camp map and trying to decide which site you want. We're going to be there again this Memorial Day weekend and when I made the reservation all the good sites were gone for tent campers (so we're taking a port-a-potty w/outhouse).

The campground is very family friendly and on Sunday mornings (maybe just during the holidays ) there is a continental breakfast free for all the campers. One thing that they don't allow is alcoholic beverages (but someone did leave a beer can at the fire ring at our last campsite so I don't know how well it is enforced). Last year was a big drought season for Atlanta so there was a no-fire ban at the campgrounds. They did allow you to use the open grills.

Comfort stations were cleaner than the state parks but still nothing compared to FW.

Areas around the lake were the most shaded. Here's our last campsite on the lake:

Yes, they still do the laser show. They did a special tribute to our troops during Memorial Day Weekend...it was the best one ever! During Labor Day weekend it was their regular show and during Christmas break it was a Christmas show, shortened to about 15 to 20 minutes and would run every hour in the evening. We didn't camp there during our Christmas break since the tent sites were closed and because I'm too chicken to camp in the cold .

We camped there about 4 years ago. We had a good time. The park is nice and there are a lot of things to do. The bathrooms were clean but very, very basic and not air conditioned. Also, there were a lot of yellow jackets and most everyone in our party was stung at least once.

My Wife and I and our two girls (6 & 4) camped there last July 4th and had a great time. As others have mentioned, the laser show is great and they include fireworks every night as well. On July 4th they actually launch additional fireworks from the top of the mountain which makes for a great show. Folks start showing up at 9 in the morning to get a good spot.

One additional point on the camping is that many of the sites are extremely unlevel as they are built into the mountian. Some folks had blocks more than 12" high on one side of their pop up, so be sure to bring enough wood or leveling blocks. We had one of the loops close to the Pavillion, Pool area and it was pretty level.

We are planning to go back this summer with some friends.

One additional point on the camping is that many of the sites are extremely unlevel as they are built into the mountian.

Some loops kind of stair step from what I have been told so that the rear of one TT will overhang the campsite to the rear of it on the lower loop so you not only have to worry about side to side leveling, in some cases you may not be able to use your rear stabilizers if you have a long TT. In those cases I would recommend trying to get a site along the lake (more level) or don't un-hook from your tow vehicle!

We have camped there several times in the past. We usually stop there for the night on our way from NC to Destin, FL. As others have said, several of the sites are extremely unlevel as well as short. We stopped there once, and I had to use 20 Lynx Levelers just to get one side of the 5'er level. The trailer was cocked so bad that I couldn't get the truck unhooked from trailer without the bed of the truck dragging the uderside of the overhang.

If you go, and are traveling in an RV, request the area that surrounds the pool area. All of that area is the most level and spacious in the park.

Also as others have said, there is lots to do there.

Got a question about an overnight stay. Everything on the website states 2 night minimum on the weekends and the website wouldn't even let me book just one night on a weekend night.

Is this enforced in person?? Have you ever done your 1-night stay on a weekend night?

You know Carol, whenever we have been there, we always arrived on Saturday evening, and have just took our chances and drove up. We never have tried to make any reservations. Also we have always traveled there the first week of May, so I'm not sure if that is their prime time season or not.

Due to our last experiences there with trying to level a 40' 5th wheel, I'm not sure we would go back unless we could choose our site in advance, which would mean at least a two night stay....

Thanks for the info!! I need a place to stop for one Saturday night near Atlanta in March and I'm not finding any options!! Stone Mt tells me 2 nights, the nearby Corp of Engineers campground locks their gates at 9pm and doesn't open them till 7am (not sure I can get there by 9pm and I need to get out by 6am). So right now it's either a Wal-Mart parking lot (which I have found and have telephone confirmation that they allow overnighters) or get a hotel. If the weather is pleasant I'll stick with the boodocking at Wal-Mart, but if it's really cold, I'll want some heat, (don't have a furnace, just heat pump) so I'll swing through Stone Mountain and see what they've got!!

We were there a few years back. Beautiful park. Loved sitting outside and listening to the train go around the mountain. It is pretty hilly and steep. Chock your wheels well before you unhitch. It was a great experience.

Yes a few years back. They used to keep tents and popups in one section and TT and bigger in other areas. Which I felt sucked since some friends were with us and had a TT. Nice park and lots to see and do.
