OT- Hardboiled Eggs

to save energy, you can cook eggs in your dishwasher during the normal course of cleaning dishes. Place the egg in a container of water, preferably on the bottom rack. Run the washer on the longer, complete cycle. They'll be done when your dishes are.

ewww!

To save energy? How much energy does it take to bring a pot half full of water to a boil and then turn it off? :confused3

Cooking eggs in a dishwasher (with porous shells) is plain and simple nasty. :scared1:

I cook a dozen at a time for 40minutes. Anything less than 40minutes is watery.

We eat the whites & give the yolks to the dog.

yum

FORTY minutes??

I bring mine to a boil (from cold water) and remove from the heat. Cover and let them sit for 13-14 mins, drain the warm water and cover with cold water. Perfect every time.

I can't imagine what they must look like after cooking for forty mins!

I cook my hardboiled eggs the same way your mom said to, but when they are done, not only do I run cold tap water over them, I also dump a bunch of ice into the pan (that's what my mom always did). :thumbsup2

This. You have to stop the cooking process. I usually fill my sink with ice water as the 15-20 minutes are ending, and scoop the eggs out of the water.

I also add salt to the cooking water, not only to bring the water to boiling faster, but to seal the shells in the event of a crack.

Another 10 minutes boiler then ice bath person here. Never had a ring. I would have found it weird too. Interesting tidbit of information though.

This a joke, right? At least I hope so.

I know, I know, it does seem excessive! lol

But, I swear, anything less than that & they are awful to peel & taste like mush.

And wouldn't the detergent soak into the shells and contaminate the eggs? :scared1: It sounds unsafe as well as disgusting. I think I'd rather waste the tiny amount of energy it would take to boil a pan of water than risk ingesting dishwashing detergent in my eggs.

I just googled cooking eggs in the dishwasher because that seemed weird/gross to me, too. Apparently if you do it, you're supposed to put the eggs in the dishwasher inside a *sealed* glass container full of water. I guess that would at least prevent detergent/food particles from getting on the eggs. I still won't be trying it though.

To boil eggs, I do the cover with water, bring to a boil, remove from heat and let sit 15-20 minutes, then rinse with cold water or ice water method. Sometimes I get the greenish-grey ring and sometimes I don't. It's a personal victory when the yolk is completely yellow (even though I only eat the yolks in deviled eggs.)

Hi everyone! Last night I made hardboiled eggs per my mom's instructions (eggs have a sell by date of 7/7/11). She said "put the eggs in a pot, cover with tap water, at least an inch above the eggs. Bring to a rolling boil, turn off the oven, but keep the eggs on the stove with a lid on top to finish cooking for 15 minutes. Then pour out the water and run tap water over them to cool a bit and store in the fridge." So, I did just that.

This morning I packed up 2 eggs in a tupperware container, and put it in my insulated lunch bag surrounded with a flexible ice pack. At lunch, I peeled and cut into the eggs and there was a gray ring around the yolks. Mom said it was fine to eat that way- it wouldn't hurt me. The eggs seemed fine otherwise?

She was right that it was ok to have that ring....right? I'm freaking out about it now! So not budget.... sorry! But I trust the BB!!!! :goodvibes

Eggs were fine. Maybe even a little tough. Just a tad over done
