You guys have definitely talking me into camping! I have been doing a lot of 'exploring' on line, and have found something interesting.
KOA says they have something called "Kampin Kabins" that are simply a stand alone empty cabins (raised cot-type areas for sleeping bags) with AC/heat, a front porch with a swing, and a picnic table with grill outside. I thought this would be a great way to experiment with the kids, seeing how they like camping, without having to pack our tent, sun canopy, etc. I looks like I would need to bring everything else needed for roughing it EXCEPT the tent (which I cannot put up by myself, no matter now much I try).
Have any of you stayed in these before? Or at a KOA? Please let me know if I am on the right track here. I'd love to get the hang of this camping thing before I take a looooong camping trip to FW someday.
Thanks!

Welcome gardendame. We sometimes stay at KOA's with extended family. Some of them get kamping kabins or kottages. May I suggest www.koa.com. They should have full description. We've been to the Old Forge KOA (Adirondacks), the Watkins Glen KOA (Finger Lakes) and for Fourth of July weekend we'll be staying at the Lake Placid KOA. I can't wait.

Kamping kabins are small. They usually have one full size bed and two bunks. They also have a little shelf in there. They have electricity and depending on what part of the country you live in, they may have AC or heat. They have a small porch with a swing seat.

Some KOA's have two room kabins which just adds an extra bedroom.

Kamping kottages are a lot bigger. They have a kitchen and bathroom and a separate bedroom. But they usually run about $100 a night.

Don't forget that you need to bring all your linens and the bathrooms are not inside each cottage/cabin. We got off to a late start home from FW due to "techincal difficulties" and I called ahead to the KOA in Florence to inquire about the cottages. I specifically told them I didn't want to have to unload anything from the camper that night. Well, we checked in and found NOTHING inside the cottage!!! :earseek: So...I had to get inside the camper and dig all the stuff out that I didn't want to!! If you are prepared, I'm sure they'd be fun....if you aren't expecting nothing, well, you are in for a shock!!

We have done this several times on our way to the Fort. We have a pop up and don't want to set it all up just to take it down at 3am. I don't think it would make our neighbors happy. We just pack what we know we will need for the night re: sleeping bags, pillows and whatever else where it is easily accessible. Works out great.

We're staying at Pt. South SC on our trip down to FW, they have an old train caboose that we are staying in. It sleeps six, has A/C and a small fridge. My grandson is going to love it since he loves trains. Coming home we're renting Kabins. As stated before they are basically an empty room, but if you plan ahead for what you need to take out you should be OK. Remember, they don't have a kitchen. Plan your meals accordingly!

Thanks everyone! One more questions (a dumb one too, so please forgive). What about indoor lights? Electric outlets?

I remember a hanging light in the center of the room and an electric outlet in the corner.

I am looking to do this option this summer. Anyone else have any experience with the ones at Carowinds or Williamsburg? We are planning to go at the end of June and hope to do this. Williamsburg ones have AC but not sure about Carowinds one. Any other input?

check KOA.com. You can search by state and see what each Kabin has
