DH and I are going to DC next weekend, and it will be our first trip alone in a LONG time
If it were you - would you go for the gusto and stay at a 5 star hotel across for the white house, or play it safe and stay at a hampton 3 star close to downtown? Difference is $175.

we are only there for Fri/Sat/Sun- come home sunday evening, and we plan on seeing the sights
We are visting a friend of DH's from high shool

It depends on what you mean by a LONG time!
Dh and I have been married for 22 years and never gone anywhere alone, we hope to go to WDW for our 25th and you'd better believe we are going to go all out!!!
If you mean you have been married a few years it might not be such a big deal, but I guess your budget should be the deciding factor;)

Have fun, we love DC, but we did it with 4 kids!

I would spend the extra money on some great meals instead. If you are going to be out seeing the sites all day you'll only be sleeping in the room.

I would go all out but I would use Priceline to do it. With the economy so bad, I have had great luck with Priceline this Summer. The deals have been bargains like I hadn't gotten in years. Look at Biddingfortravel.com to get an idea of what kind of deals people are getting and then bid!
