My daughter (13) has dark hair on her upperlip too. I did take her to be tested to make sure it wasn't hormonal and it is not , just heredity from DH's side. We just bleach it right now and while you can still see the hair it is less noticable then the dark hair. I have told her when she is ready that I will take her to get it waxed or lasered. She is scared to death of the pain of either so until she is ready we just bleach. I will let her decide when the time is right.

I bought one of those little purple hair removers from Wal mart. It is basically a very fine sand paper and it actually works. I think it was $7 total. The little purple thing is rubber and it comes with several refills of the pink "sand paper". I love mine. I am very pale with dark hair....it works wonders and no pain. Waxing hurts...plus adds up quickly. This thing has been a life saver!

How fast is the regrowth after using something like this? And how long do you need to wait to do it again after the hair starts growing. My DD is afraid to get wax or laser right now but she might be interested in this.

I use the Nair for facial hair. Works pretty well without the pain, but the hair has gradually grown in darker and coarser. Have to do it about once a week. Thinking of trying laser. Have done electrolosis but very painful and takes forever.

Wax it. I have blonde hair, but still get my lip waxed every few weeks. If she's not sensitive, she can probably get away with a nail salon wax, which is cheaper.

Another Italian here! I have dark hair but a pale complexion, so not the greatest combo for upper lip hair lol!

I mostly use Jolen bleach, but have waxed in the past and will probably start doing so again. My tech used to give me an ice cube to put on the upper lip after waxing to calm the irritation, seemed to work well!

My daughter whom is 10 asked me if she could wax her mustache and shave her legs. My answer to both was that she would have to keep up with both or it will come back worse. Last November when we went on our DCL cruise and she had me shave her arm pits. She did not keep up with it and when she went to camp this last week I had to shave her underarms. It was not an easy task because she had not kept up with it.
I use Sally Hansen for the face for my upper lip but did not start until I was in my late teens and it bothered me. I want her to feel confident about herself and it's her choice but overall she is responsible for it. I am allergic to Nair and think it's too harsh.

I love threading! I have a friend from Nepal who does my eyebrows for me and its incredible! Absolutely no chemicals, wax, or hormones, Totally natural. She literally uses thread to pull out the hairs; my eyebrows have never looked better! Maybe you can look into in your area, lots of salons offer it now. Good Luck

I strongly suggest bleaching & only reccommend waxing if bleaching doesn't get the desired results.

Jolen (long e like jo-lean) bleach is my product of choice but there are others on the market as well (ex. Sally Hansen).

Waxing can become expensive, is uncomfortable, can be inconvenient & since she is an adolescent, the hair may grow back quicker than say an adult.

I'm an Italian woman with black hair & light olive skin. Been bleaching since I was an older teen (after about two years of waxing).

I respectfully disagree with the bleach idea. Although some people may love it, it does not get rid of the facial hair. So instead of having a dark haired mustache, you just have a blonde one. It may be slightly less noticible because it is lighter, but it is still there and she will still get teased.

I haven't had great luck with waxing. I've broken out and ended up looking worse (like I have a horrific cold and am chapped under my nose). And you do have to be careful with bleaching - though I think that its the easiest and if the problem is fine dark hair against light skin, it works fine (if the hair is courser, you'll probably want it removed). I like threading, although its painful and needs to be kept up which involves regular trips to the threader.

I haven't tried any more "semi permanent" methods - though I'm tempted.

I can't believe no one has suggested Vaniqa. I am a 46 year old woman who has had this problem forever and tried everything. I always to seemed to have a shadow no matter what method I tried. Finally got a prescription for Vaniqa cream about 4 years ago. Works great, no irritation and only need to use once a day. It is kind of expensive, about $70 a tube but last 6 months or so. Also, first time you get prescription go to website and get a discount for filling it. I have PCOS which makes the facial hair a real issue and this is the only thing that has gotten rid of all the hair and the shadow and stubble. No regrowth issues or waiting to grow in for waxing, etc. Hate to sound like a commercial but I swear by the stuff. Your primary care should be able to give you a prescription.

I vote for waxing. I so wish my mother had taken me! I tweezed my eyebrows and pulled out the skin (cheap tweezers will do that). When I finally had my eyebrows waxed, I looked like a new woman. Same thing with lip. I do turn red, though, so I eat a banana before I get it done, but I wouldn't trade it!

I have also done laser for underarms and bikini line and after seeing how the follicle has to grow out after being lasered, I would never do it on my face.

My daughter has been getting her middle brow waxed since she was 6 years old. She has very dark hair and kids were already calling her names.

She started shaving her legs at 8. While I worried that it was too young, my Mom didn't let me until 11, my DH told me why am I making her wait if it's bothering her now? And you know what, he was right. She just gets her middle brow done and it cost's us $2 a time. She goes 1x a month.

When she is older, laser removal will be my gift to her. I had my legs, bikini, underarms and brows done and it was worth every penny!

I am a hairstylist and we do lots of facial waxes on preteen girls. A "mustache" doesn't do much for self esteem and kids can be mean... Your salon may have lidocain that they can use to help numb the area first. Also, applying a thin layer of talc powder will keep the wax from sticking to the skin, so it pulls only the hair. I wouldn't suggest bleaching. Her skin is more sensitive than an adults and more susceptible to chemical burns.

Thank you for reminding me of this - I had planned on asking DD's derm next time we go in about Vaniqa. Did you need to wax or use a hair remover first then with the continued use of Vaniqa the hair won't grow back?

ITA...I can spot a bleached moustache a mile away. Ladies, I promise you that others can notice a "blonde" moustache as much as you don't want to hear this.

Lasers are very effective but they can be expensive. Luckily, it is something you don't know more than once every month so you have time to save up in between sessions. I also recommend going to a cosmetic surgeon's office to have this done instead of a chain place like Hair Today Gone Tomorrow or Ideal Image. Please just take my word on this!

Just take her to the salon and get it waxed. Have her do her eyebrows too, and she'll look at it as a pampering beauty thing instead of having a mustache.

Threading. It's SO easy. Do a youtube search for a how-to video. DH (hope he doesn't read this! ) even has me do the stray hairs between his brows this way.

That's all I could find but it looks like the same thing. I Paid $12 for the kit (all they had) that includes a big one for legs and underarms.

I couldn't wait to try it. The facial buffer thing does work! It was really easy, but it still feels the same afterwards as if I had waxed it, like a little sting. I am going to see if my DD8 wants to try it. She has been complaining also about her little 'stache and I have asked her several times if she wants to try the string thing at the mall, but she is nervous. This really didn't hurt at all.
