Planning a trip to Alberta for next summer. When I was a kid we drove several times and always went through the US to Sault Ste. Marie and then the rest of the way through Canada. I have tried a few "map sites" and they all give me the same route (even CAA) and that is to go through the US all the way to Manitoba and then up through Winnipeg. They all run about 2000 miles and 32 hours driving time. Is that the quickest way? I'd like to know the comparison milage and time to go through SSM and across Ontario. Has anyone driven to Alberta? What route did you take and what was your driving time?

We drove from Alberta to Ottawa a couple of years ago. We went south in Saskatchewan and crossed into North Dakota (the Interstate through N.D. is a twinned highway with light traffic). We were in a motorhome and the gas prices in the U.S. were quite a bit cheaper at that time. We went through the States to Sault Ste. Marie and then through to Ottawa. I don't know the exact number of hours it took, but it took us 3 days of driving with a few stops along the way.

My dh did the reverse of Pokeman when he moved out here before the rest of us.(except he crossed the border in Alberta rather than Saskatchewan)

He went from Ottawa to Edmonton. Drove through Canada until he got to Sault Ste. Marie....through the U.S. into Montana....back into Canada somewhere south of Lethbridge where the border is.
