I am planning a trip from the Toronto area to New York City this spring What is the better way to travel. I thought that crossing the border at the 1000 istands and going though Syracuse would be the better route. However I put it on Mapquest and they suguest crossing the border at Buffalo. What route is better? What are the tolls are the thruway?

TIA

Hey Mike,

After a few of us who used Mapquest yesterday, I think I would use the Syracuse route!

But seriously, the route thru Syracuse is more country and scenic whereas the Buffalo route is all Thurway.

Having driven this route many times, the following are worth considering...

a) where you're starting from is important - if your'e in Oakville and points west (or from Hamilton - Niagara) it's easier to just fo the Buffalo route (Thruway)...from anywhere else in the GTA...I would do 401 to I-81 (cross at Thousand Isles)

b) the border crossing delay potential is a factor...here the Thousand Isles route wins hands-down due to comparatively light traffic vs the Buffalo crosssings

c) scenery/things to do: here again the Thousand Isles route wins...it's less trafficky, and there are EZ off/on places along I-81 to stretch your legs during business hours (Salmon Run Mall in Watertown, NY; Carousel Center in Syracuse, NY). Plus, love a brief glance at the Thousand Isles!

Hope this helps
