OT - Dr. Oz on Oprah

Real bacon is real bacon. It's not another meat that has additives to make it taste like bacon.
Butter is healthier than margarine for the same reason.
Any artificial food is that-artificial.

also good for you -- pure lard. It's 100 percent natural. ;)

I'm puzzled that Dr. Oz doesn't take saturated fat vs. unsaturated into consideration. Bacon has a lot more *saturated fat* than turkey bacon.

But you know what's much better than either turkey bacon or regular bacon? Soy bacon. Very low in calories and fat and also tasty. We make it here all the time.

Sorta OT..... I just ordered the 3 pack of the "Eat This Not That" books. I saw the new one at Walmart and was going to get it from our library, but Amazon had the 3 pack on sale. I really want to read the one for kids. It's supposed to have the 20 WORST kid's meals in America.

Does anyone have these books? I'm trying to lose by making better choices and thought these might help.

I'm probably blind, but I'm not seeing the 3 pack of the books on Amazon. Do you by chance have a link to them? I'd definately be interested in buying the set.

yes! Lightlife Smart bacon :thumbsup2 very good stuff.
If you have ever looked at vegan with a vengeance cookbook, she has a recipe for tempeh bacon, that is super good, i hate tempeh, but this is tasty,

He believes that saturated fat in moderation is better than artificial food.
Soy is not good for people with thyroid conditions.

Lard is not bad in moderation. Nothing much as far as food goes is bad in moderation except fake food.

But let's face it--bacon in and of itself is a pretty bad food (but delicious). Yep, real meat but a TON of additives. I couldn't believe the stats I read on the increase in pancreatic cancer by eating bacon once a week. It was something like a 30% increase. Nitrates are bad stuff. But, I love some bacon!

So butter and lard are better than margarine??? :confused3

I have been buying this for years.

Dr Oz says that because our ancestors have been eating butter for centuries our bodies can process it and later burn it off. Margarine is relatively new so our bodies do not know how to process it and it goes strait to fat.

Well I need to re-think all this margarine then!!! ::yes::

Hmm. We're veggie so we obviously eat veggie "bacon", or "soy'con" as we call it. But a friend of mine is omnivorous, and when she was on Weight Watchers, she realized that a serving of bacon was the same, if not fewer, Points than the morningstar farms soy'con was.

I don't think Dr. Oz is advocating eating butter at all.

check out Smart Balance or Earth Balance for a healthy alternative to margerine and butter :)

I will because I just cannot wrap myself around having butter in the house...DH will consume way to much if I go that route.

I don't understand how regular bacon can be better. I've looked at the calories and it was 25 calories (turkey) vs 45 calories (regular) per slice of bacon. The sodium content was 180 mg (turkey) vs 195 mg (regular). Can you explain why regular is better?

I read labels all the time. I don't trust people who get on TV to tell me what is better when I can see it with my own eye.

no -- you have to look at the serving size to see that soy bacon is better. A serving of bacon is usually 1 small strip; soy bacon is 2 strips. If you calculate out all the calories, it's 60 calories for soy bacon vs. 87 for real bacon (that's for a uniform serving size of 16 grams). So about 1/3 less for the same amount. The soy stuff also has much less saturated fat and sodium.

With weight watchers, the calculations are kind of weird, though. a point is 50 calories, and I think you round the #, so it could turn out to be the same # of points if you're just talking about one or two strips. If you had more, though, the numbers would catch up on you and the real bacon would be more points.

They're both tasty, though!

I buy no nitrate bacon & hot dogs.:goodvibes
Applegate Farms is a great brand, I shop at Stop & Shop & Trader Joes mostly.

Wow, we eat bacon, eggs and toast every weekend. We alternate between real bacon and turkey bacon. Looks like that doesn't make a difference.

We use Smart Balance.

I get an Eat this-not that email a few times a week. Its fascinating. We're going to get the supermarket book(s) this weekend.

I just got back from both of those stores. Wish I had seen this first! I'll have to take a look for that brand. Thanks.

Thanks for the info! I'll have to plan an exploratory trip there. It's new and I've only been there a couple of times. I just did a quickie today to pick up some of DS's faves for his birthday.

I do the "natural" or no nitrates stuff too, when I buy bacon. Gotta have it for BLT's sometimes!
