OT: Cute Snack (gifts) to Send to School

I love the chocolate covered pretzel idea! I guess I just don't understand - how do you get the chocolate to harden all the way around, won't one side be flat or is that OK? Also, when you drizzle the colored chocolate on, are you drizzling squiggly lines, or totally coating it - how do the sprinkles stick? And the next stupid question I have - how many do you put in each treat bag? Is one large pretzel rod enough? Thank you so much for the idea!!

Hi Molly,
I've dipped the pretzels in the chocolate and just put them on wax paper in the refrig. Yes, they flatten on the bottom, but nobody seems to really notice. I've never done it, but a lot of people put a bit of parafin in the chocolate to firm it up so the chocolate doesn't melt as easily. I've just kept them refrigerated until we serve them. Maybe someone else who's added parafin to choc. can offer a tip how to do this.
I just use a spoon to drizze the colored or white chocolate and make crazy back and forth drizzles and IMMEDIATELY sprinkle so the sprinles stick.
I put two pretzels in each bag and tie them up with cute ribbon. One pretzel is definately enough for the little ones (at school, they just tied the one they didn't eat and took it home).
I was really intimidated by this idea when I saw it in a book but I tackled it since we have so many restrictions (no cupcakes, no nuts) and I wanted something cute.
They were time consuming to do, but not hard and definately a hit!
Hope this helps. Have a great day! :sunny:

I'm a speech therapist in a preschool and my children go to a different preschool, and both places do not allow peanuts or peanut butter at all, so make sure of the guidelines. In the school where I work, we are not allowed to bring anything that is not pre-packaged although my children's school still allows homemade goodies. Just double check with the administration before making your treats.

Thank you so much, Minniebeth! This will be great for so many occassions! My first attempt will be a treat for 6 y.o. cheerleaders next week in team colors. And they sound yummy!

If you have a "Cake N Candy" store in your area, they sell little chocolate (and white chocolate in colors) discs that you melt and you don't need paraffin or anything else. Plus they also sell the long pretzel bags. Last Xmas I made a recipe that had caramel, chocolate chips, nuts and you rolled the pretzel in this stuff---OH MY GOSH! they were soooooo good! Although the nut thing might not be so good for a school.

Yep, sprinkle them with marshmallows, choc chips, sprinkles etc etc while they're still wet. When I make regular ones, I drizzle red, white, green and chocolate for a real holiday effect. The candy stores even have orange discs for Halloween.

I will definately be doing a search for this store! Thank you! :)

Thanks, Ribbot! Now I remember seeing those discs at Party City (we don't have Cake N Candy) - Maybe they'll even have bags!

Our Michael's and AC Moore's Stores have the "Candy Melts" (In the cake decorating supplies)
I think Wal-Mart even carries some colors in the craft section (the wedding part & the cake decorating).

Anyone know if you can tint those candy melts?

Not sure if you can tint them---I do know that you absolutely CAN NOT add any water to them at all or it ruins them. There are many colors to the discs that I've seen.

I've seen the discs at Giant Eagle Grocery store also near the produce section.

Maybe even "regular" type candy stores carry them? Can't remember if I've seen them in ours or not.

Ohhhh the name just hit me....Merkins is the brand name. Maybe they have an online site?
