Does anyone know if you had H1N1 from four years ago (or the vaxxine) if you can get the strain that is currently going around or would you now be immune?

Four years ago DS (then 9) was hospitalized with it for one week, lost 25% of his body weight and had partial kidney failure. He survived but it took about one year for him to be "well" again.

Call me paranoid but I will take EXTRA EXTRA precautions if there is any risk that he could get the new strain.

Any information would be really appreciated.

Thank you

As far as I am aware (based on what I have read in the news) the strains are each different and can mutate regularly which is why they recommend that everyone has the vaccine every year.

Hopefully someone with better knowledge will be able to confirm/deny though!!

Apparently the strain of H1N1 currently making the rounds is sufficiently similar to the previous one that your son should be immune to it. Also, if you have had this year's flu vaccine (that became available in the fall), you're covered as well. I'm not sure if a vaccination in previous years for H1N1 would still give you immunity. Many vaccines require "booster" shots to maintain their effectiveness. And, of course, the flu vaccine differs each year in the types of flu strains that it protects against.

call me crazy, but shouldn't you consult a medical professional like your family doctor instead of asking strangers on a Disney vacation planning forum?

I am a little worried about it coming back as well. I had it 4 yrs ago and also pneumonia. I was in the hospital for a week as well. I can't take the flu shots.

I work in healthcare and see plenty of inside info on influenza and the vaccines.

Your past history with the flu plays no part in this years viruses. The vaccines do not last beyond a year which is why you require a new one each year. Even though you get the shot you can still get the virus. You would most likely not become as sick though.

Your best line of defense is always going to be proper and frequent hand washing. Couple that with not touching your face before your hands are clean.
