OT-Chlorine bleach

I work in a hospital and when we have a patient who may have had the stomach virus, especially this year with the Norwalk outbreak, the housekeepers have to clean that room with bleach and not the regular cleaners they use. The regular cleaners are not effective against Norwalk, only bleach will kill the virus.

Big difference between Norwalk in a hospital, and cleaning a normal range of bacteria and virus in a normal home.:confused3

It is true if you've allowed yourself to have a working and efficient immune system. Otherwise, since I don't use bleach for anything, I must be dead and not know it.:confused3

That is not what you said though. You said that hot water and detergent will do as much as bleach ever did. That is an incorrect statement.

Hot water and detergent is a sufficient every day cleaning method however it is absolutely not acceptable if what you are trying to do is kill bacteria....

:confused3 Works fine at my house...and my sister's, who has the same allergy-plus 4 active boys and a dairy farm.:confused3

We're all entitled to our own opinion....and mine is that bleach is largely unecessary in life.

See above answer....and not everything in life needs to be sanitized...it's through exposure to small amounts of viral agents that we have an immune system.

That was not what you said. You said that soap and water did the same job as bleach. That is not true. I do not clean with bleach every day, but when one of us has a stomach bug or the flu I use it to clean afterwards so the rest of us don't get it. I fully believe that we have to be exposed to some microbes to have a well developed immune system. We are almost never sick, but when someone has something obviously bad and contagious I do everything I can to insure the rest of us don't get it. No matter how hard you rant rave and argue about it you can't change the fact that bleach kills viruese and bacteria and soap and water will not. There are situations in everyone's household where an antimicrobial is necessary. You may not use bleach and you don't have to use it to live ( love your scarcasm by the way ) but i choose to use it to keep MY family healthly in certian situations. You may not feel it is the right choice for your family, but saying that it is bad for the environmnet and bad for everyone who comes into contact with it is sperading misinformation and I feel like I have to say something about it because what you are saying is simply not true. I don't know how much plainer I can make it.

We had Norwalk in my house once. Used bleach to clean and no one other than DH got it. Worked Great. IN THE HOUSE!!!!! A NORMAL HOUSE!!!!!!

I am far from a germophobe, and I very rarely use bleach to clean anything. Honestly i don't think I've used it more than twice in the last ten years.

There are some cases where bleach is necessary. Soap and hot water are not as effective in some situations.

The main point is that bleach is not generally harmful.
