We're looking into camping this spring/summer in Lake George NY. Any suggestions, we've never been here.

Thanks

I'll respond only because Lake George is near and dear to my heart. Specifically Ticonderoga where we've had family since its founding. It depends on what your look for. If you want lots of people and action, stay at the south end of the lake. I think the most popular place is Lake George Escape. If you want quiet, look at the north end of the lake. I know there's a campground at Rogers Rock. It is nice and quiet up north. Here are some more options. Try posting in the Open Roads forum at rv.net. You'll have better luck there.

What type of camping? We go into the Adirondacks for the high peaks sometimes, but that's back packing. Our daughter lives in Glens Falls -- I'll ask her for recommendations based on what type of camping you want. There are a few state parks in the area that are quite good.

Tent or cabin camping, most likely tent. We will have 5 adults and four kids between the ages of 15 down to 5. So a pretty active place. I know one family is looking into making at stop at Six Flags Great Escape so probably something close to that, and we're interested in the more outdoorsy type things.

And I should mention the adults haven't camped in a LONG time and none of the kids have at all, with the exception of a cabin at FW and that's not really camping.

I just registered at these forums....

We have been to Lake George Evergreen Escape Campground multiple times, and it has been great everytime. It is a large, well run campground, and many of the "employees" are workcampers so they are very good. The "camp store" is HUGE, it is a full size store, not just a convenience store. There is a lot to do at the campground, with many things costing extra, but also alot of free stuff, you just have to ask.

Try not to go too early in the year, as sometimes the river can flood the riverside campsites.

When we went last year (family of four), my son and I drove up to Fort Ticonderoga. It is very much worth it, a really great place to learn about the revolution. And it is the legitimate fort, not a replica. Make sure you drive on 9A North, which goes along the lake. It is a very scenic (and hilly!) drive. Rte 9 north parallels it, but it is just your normal boring highway.

We are seasonal at Alpine Lake RV Resort. It's located in Corinth. This is located between Lake George and Saratoga Springs. Which are both great areas. We especially enjoy Saratoga. Disney's newest DVC's are based on Saratoga Springs, NY.

There is both tent and RV camping at Alpine. There are two lakes for fishing and swiming. Pool...and a kiddie pool. Basketball, tennis and nightly activities in season. Also they offer a trolley that will take you to both Lake George..the village, and Great Escape, the Six flags park, and to Saratoga.
You can take a look at www.AlpineLakeRVResort.com

They are a sister resort to The Lake George Escape, only personally I find the Alpine location more convenient to the places we enjoy visiting. Takes about 15 minutes to Lake George or Saratoga.

We LOVE the Lake George RV Park. It is large and fairly pricey, but they have lots of activities going on throughout the day. The last time we were there we ended up extending our stay an extra couple of nights. We enjoyed the pools, shuffleboard, biking paths, paddleboats, movie theater...well you get the idea. They have a bus transportation system too if I remember correctly. Check out the website

As theme park junkies, my girlfriend and I have tent-camped at both Fort Wilderness and Lake George for the last two summers. We always make a point to visit the Great Escape to ride Comet and the Pirate Ship. We stay at Hearthstone Point State Campground, which is about 3 miles north of Lake George Village, and 8 miles north of Great Escape. It is also on the Trolley line that goes up and down Rte 9. It's a great state campground with a spacious beach and nice waterfront. You can check it out here: http://www.reserveamerica.com/camping/Hearthstone_Point/r/campgroundDetails.do?agency=NY&parkId=505

We'll be there for the 4th of July for the 3rd straight year! Let me know if you would like more information.
