I wouldn't wait...I'd cancel altogether or at least switch my accomodations to Banff if at all possible. I don't know what you were planning to do in Canmore but even if your hotel happens to be open by then the town is still going to be a hugh mess. Almost nothing in Banff was water-damaged, presuming you can get there from here. There are alternate routes (from the south and from the northwest) but they will add hundreds of miles to the trip (normally 40 minutes from Calgary).
JSYK, the City is also in serious disarray; 100,000 people were evacuated and most of them still have no idea if/when they can return home. With the rain & hail pounding down and the water rising everywhere yesterday was like something out of a movie...millitary convoys from CFB Edmonton were everywhere, grocery stores were mobbed and people were hoarding food and water. Tons of roadways were impassable and traffic jams were epic - you couldn't leave the City to the south or the west. All you could hear for hours on end was the whipping wind and continuous emergency vehicle sirens and helicopter blades. Surreal. Luckily there have been no casualties in Calgary proper (three to the south in High River). Thank you for your prayers.
Thank you! My husband backpacks in Banff & surrounding areas every summer & once he saw the photos we decided to cancel. This was a family trip & our kids are 12 & 9. We assumed even if we could get to Canmore the side roads & mountain trails might be in rough shape & no rafting or fishing. We will try again another time!
