OT, but who lives near me?? (PSU)

thanks tinkntraining - I can't even explain what it's like to be in Beaver Stadium with over 100,000 people - I get chills just thinking about it. By the way, I'm in Ocean City, MD :goodvibes

Just wanted to say HI! I see you are from upstate NY -we are from Herkimer!
I have always thought of upstate NY as our area, but alot of people just consider it anything north of NYC. :confused3 Anyway just wanted to say Hi!

It's funny how they do that with NY. I live in the Hudson Valley, about a hour North of NYC, and always thought of my home town as the middle of NY, or the Mid Hudson Valley, but many people refer to anything North of NYC as upstate, even though we are two and a half hours South of the Adirondack region.

TWO DIS'ers know where Mifflinburg is? WOW -- I'm honestly surprised. But, what is the Happy Valley event the end of August? Not the Grange Fair, not the Arts Festival, not opening home game, you need to tell me!
:confused3

Of course it's the fair!! I can only get off for the weekend, not the full 10 days, but for as long as I'm in the states, I do my bestest to make it back there! I drag my hubby along, but he just doesn't see the fascination. He agrees that it's unique, but doesn't share my passion for yummy fries, pierogies, funnel cake, dough-boys, sugar waffles and raisin filled cookies (an Amish specialty that the rest of the country SWEARS don't even exist!) At least I can get my funnel cake fix at disney!

Isn't the Arts Festival this weekend? Or maybe it was last weekend. I loved going to that as a kid.

As the OP stated, this thread is OT for the Attractions and Strategies board. I've moved it to our Community board. :)

I don't really get Grange Fair, but I know that I'm in a minority...Have a great time!

Arts Fest was this past weekend. It's my favorite time of year up here! :lovestruc

Thanks Neesy - I do consider myself a pretty big PSU fan. In fact, I was in WDW last Sept for the Notre Dame game. I had planned on leaving Garden Grill in Epcot an hour before kickoff to get to our room & watch the game. Initially I was going alone but my 2 yr old refused to let me leave without him, which put me about a 1/2 hour behind schedule. So I put him in the stroller & jogged to the bus area. There were two buses for my resort - All Star Sports - both were busy putting disabled persons in wheelchairs on the buses & there was a monster line of people waiting to board. I anxiously waited for 10 minutes & no progress was made. So I got on a bus to All Star Music, which was near my resort. When I got off I sprinted to All Star Sports with my son in the stroller. I was drenched & out of breath, but I made it back at exactly 6:00 - just in time for kick off.

Alright, now that's dedication!! I was in the parking lot tailgating for that game...started at 10am. It was c-r-a-z-y!

Where do you live in OC? (guess I should just ask you how close to the beach you are!) I love it there and we talk about moving there, but I don't know if it would be as wonderful as I'm imagining...we vacation there every year...

We live in a development just outside of town across the Rt 50 bridge. I've lived in OC for most of my life. OC is definitely different outside of the summer months - it's alot slower, not as many people around, some businesses close, etc. Although, it's much more lively than it used to be - I remember living in town 20 years ago & as soon as October came, the whole town basically shut down & it was like a ghost town - traffic lights just blinked yellow all winter long. Anyway, the job market can be tough in this area, so definitely research that if you ever do consider moving here.

The job market around here is pretty limited too...there's the university, a few bigger businesses, then Wal-mart, Target etc. How did you end up a PSU fan if you lived in OC for most of your life? Shouldn't you be a U of MD fan??

Anyway... thanks for chiming in!

Neesy 228 -- You know where Mifflinburg is??? It really is a small world, isn't it? Nice to meet you, neighbor! Gotta love those PA DISers!
.

I do, I do! It IS a small world! :goodvibes

I see from your signature that you were just to the World a few months ago. Did you have a blast? What was your favorite thing? Did you eat anywhere special?

I'm so excited to meet some fellow DISer's who are also in PA/central PA and PSU fans! Thanks for joining the conversation! :cloud9:

That's a good question - I don't know if I can give you a good answer. I guess I was just attracted to the traditional qualities of the football program: plain jerseys, no names, emphasis on team & character, etc. I remember the NC game in 1987 & how leading up to it, the U of Miami players were running their mouths & they got off the plane wearing army fatigues. I was so glad when PSU beat them... Anyway, I didn't know the U of MD had a football program :confused3

Hello fellow PA'ers - Fairfield PA checking in... :thumbsup2

Hello fellow NY'ers - Voorheesville NY checking in... :teacher:

Ah, a football purist. JoePa would be proud!

Isn't the U of MD team the terrapins or something?

We went to the PSU vs ND game last year 3 weeks before going to Disney. Our mother in law sold our season tickets the year before, so we sat at our RV and watched the game along with thousands of other campers. :confused3

Gotta love the Lions!

AHH yes, I remember seeing your thread somewhere:confused3 and commenting to my husband how much I like your green disney heads & the writing...sounds like alot of PA people here-not too many NYers!
I do like to see where people are from & how close we could be!
SO you really thought of being the middle of NY??? We are pretty close to as central NY is! Nice to meet people from our great state.:goodvibes

Sorry Neesy - that was a poor attempt on my part to take a little jab at the Terps football program. Living in MD, I have to deal with some obnoxious Terp fans, who believe MD is on the same level of the other college football elite programs - it's a nice school & I've been to a few games, but it's just not big time college football, as in the traditional college football powerhouse programs

I had to laugh when i ready your post, JoePa4Ever. Who in the heck would name their school mascot after a turtle, anyway???? :confused3 I can poke fun, since I was born and bred in MD but CHOSE to be a Nittany Lion! Like my bumper sticker says, "I bleed blue and white".... Lucky you, living in OC -- that was our summer vacation for years when I lived in MD. Spent a lot of time at the Cork Bar in my early twenties, lol. Is it still there? Last November, my DH and I went back for a weekend and experienced OC in the Winter. It was wonderful -- such a different feeling. I wish some more shops on the boardwalk had been open, but I loved the serenity of the town. And the hotel prices were a wonderful surprise.

Neesy -- We had the most WONDERFUL time in May! It was our first trip (after me waiting for 41 years) and it was everything (and more) that I always dreamed it would be! We ate all over the world, but probably our favorite was Narcoossees -- we watched Wishes from the deck and it was absolutely beautiful! Now we're saving for our next trip!

Yes, the Cork Bar is alive & well! OC is definitely more of a year round resort than it used to be & you're right - you can get some phenomenal deals in the winter on very nice hotels.
