OT, but who lives near me?? (PSU)

Hello fellow NY'ers - Voorheesville NY checking in... :teacher:

It's funny how they do that with NY. I live in the Hudson Valley, about a hour North of NYC, and always thought of my home town as the middle of NY, or the Mid Hudson Valley, but many people refer to anything North of NYC as upstate, even though we are two and a half hours South of the Adirondack region.

Just wanted to say HI! I see you are from upstate NY -we are from Herkimer!
I have always thought of upstate NY as our area, but alot of people just consider it anything north of NYC. :confused3 Anyway just wanted to say Hi!

Hi Herkimer! You are certainly correct. Friends from college divided the state up into 3 parts- "The Island", "The City" and "Upstate". :rotfl: I recently talked with someone on the board from Illion, so I guess there are a few of us around. I'm actually from Oriskany.

Hi :wave2: from another upstate NYer. We live in Galway - Albany/ Saratoga region. I know there are other posters out there - I have "run into" them here on the boards. Fonda, Canajoharie, Queensbury and Rochester to name a few.

We are from Watervliet, NY which is about 10 miles East of Albany right next to Troy. I am originally from the Adirondacks (Lake Pleasant/Speculator).
We go riding dirtbikes and quads off Fishhouse Road (CATRA) not far from Galway.

We are going to Pop Aug. 24-31st this year.

Have a great trip!

 tink is going to have a heart attack if one more person tells her she knows where mifflinburg is!!

Too funny, Neesy!:lmao: I'm just realizing truly what a small world it really is -- or how many miles the DISboards covers!

I didn't go to PSU but one of my friends did..lol

I live in Chester County - PA..Malvern!

Last November, my DH and I went back for a weekend and experienced OC in the Winter. It was wonderful -- such a different feeling. I wish some more shops on the boardwalk had been open, but I loved the serenity of the town. And the hotel prices were a wonderful surprise.

Neesy -- We had the most WONDERFUL time in May! It was our first trip (after me waiting for 41 years) and it was everything (and more) that I always dreamed it would be! We ate all over the world, but probably our favorite was Narcoossees -- we watched Wishes from the deck and it was absolutely beautiful! Now we're saving for our next trip!

It is a small world! I love it!

Oh, Narcoosee's and Wishes sounds fantastic! Lucky you! We're taking our kiddos to Chef Mickeys and Princess Storybook this trip. First character meals for any of us. I cannot wait!! :goodvibes

I've often thought of going to OC in the winter...What keeps me from it is I think that our kids would be bored. If I could get someone to babysit for a long weekend....I think my DH and I would be in heaven! I am constantly watching the web cams of the boardwalk (between those and the DIS, it's amazing I have time for anything else! ;) )and the winters there look so quiet and different...OC is one of my favorite places to be. Give me some fudge from the Candy Kitchen, a bottle of water, and a bench on the Boardwalk and I'm a very happy girl!! :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:

We love character meals - do alot of them on our trips. Chef Mickey's is our favorite for breakfast with Crystal Palace a very close second. Chef Mickey's is alot of fun - very upbeat & energetic + the food & character interaction are very good.

I agree about OC in the winter for kids - the boardwalk is basically shut down except for a few places which open if the weather is really nice, so I don't know what there would be for them to do. Everything else regarding entertainment (i.e., Jolly Roger's Amusement Park, etc.) is basically shut down too in town besides the restaurants and some shops.

That's exactly what we did -- we dropped our kids off at their cousins, and headed down for a Winter Weekend at the boardwalk for some "grown up" time. It was heavenly. I agree, the kids probably would have been bored -- it's nothing like what they think the beach should be, lol -- exactly why we loved it!

You'll have to tell me how Chef Mickey's was -- I want to go now that I saw an episode of "John and Kate plus 8" (more Central PAers) when they went there. We ate lunch at Crystal Palace in May and loved it. Our first (and only) experience with a character meal. Was that only 2 months ago -- seems like forever! I can't wait to go back!

We're doing Crystal Palace too! I'm embarrassed to admit that it's mostly for me. :rolleyes1 I'm kind of a big Tigger and Eyeore fan and I love the building. I'm just dragging my kids along as an excuse!

I think that the beach in the fall/winter would be a great thing, but I think that beach any time of year is a great thing. Maybe when the kids are older...What do locals do in the winter?

I'm so jealous! We always talk about doing that, but it never happens. Maybe this year....

I didn't know the John and Kate were from PA. However, I did see the show when they took the kids to the Crayola Factory, so it should have sunk in then! Do you know where they're from?

I know the sextuplets were born at Hershey Medical Center -- somewhere near Hershey, Wyomissing, i think??

And -- sadly, I must admit that the one character (besides Minnie and Mickey, of course) that I HAD to meet, was Eeyore.....my girls are still embarrassed that I got so excited to meet him!!!! I hope I didn't hurt him when I squeezed him!:lmao:

I have a picture with Eeyore from our honeymoon. :lovestruc I practically knocked him over when I saw him! I was so excited. It was only my second time in Disney and I didn't even know that he "belonged" to the Disney family! My poor DH was mortified.

Personally, I watch alot of football :lmao: Some older locals ( and some younger ones too) leave the area & live in other places for the winter such as NC or FL. Then there are the younger locals who enjoy the local bar scene in the winter or leave for college. For local families, it's basically business as usual minus the summer traffic: working, taking care of the kids, school activities, etc. There's not alot to do in this area - whether its shopping, sporting events, entertainment, etc. - you basically have to travel for those things - although we did see Disney Princesses on Ice in Jan & saw the circus in Mar at the civic center in Salisbury (30 minutes away).

Sounds very much like it is around our area too. Not much to do in the winters...right about mid-february I start to get a little loopy. But the summers around here are fantastic! Arts Festivals, fairs, baseball, swimming, friends....maybe you should just move to Happy Valley, since you're already a fan and your already used to a slower pace!! We're 10 minutes away from Beaver Stadium and I know where JoePa lives!;)

It would be awesome to be only 10 minutes away from Beaver Stadium. Of course, I would then need to find an additional source of income as season tickets would then be an absolute necessity!

Gotta do it -- I've been holding back -- gotta hear that PSU cheer --:cheer2:

WE ARE.......... (c'mon you Nittany Lion fans)...give me the other half.....
