Aughhhhhhhh.....

For the second time in just a few months someone has stolen my banking info, I guess from the magnetic strip on my debit card, and stolen several hundred dollars. First time it was from an ATM in Asia somewhere and this time it's more local but they went on quite the little spending spree before my bank security shut down the account. I'd really like to know how someone spends $200 at a convienience store and $300 on gas. Were they stocking up the RV for a weekend camping trip????? They also bought stuff at Canadian Tire and then tried at 2 more places but the account was frozen by then.

I know the bank will refund the money to me but the frustrating part is that it has happened again and now I need to get into a branch today.

Mini rant over.....thanks for listening. :)

Don't let your bank card out of your sight. Also watch for people that have to double swipe it. That could be them using a skimmer. Much harder now that chip technology is almost everywhere now.

They are probably buying gift cards that can be used once the bank cuts off access to the debit card.

How horribly frustrating! :(

Good luck on getting things all straightened out quickly  .

I can't even remember the last time any place I shop had to swipe my card pretty much every place has the chip/pin. Even so, around here you would swipe it yourself.....they don't even touch your card they hand the machine to you.

No they were actually buying stuff....the amounts were not even ie:$212.61.

I just can't imagine what you could spend over $300 on at the Esso station.

Thanks Gina...all straight once again. I got the money back in 3 days time the only thing is that I got dinged for an NSF fee .

A purchase like that, they are buying gift cards. OR, just asking for money with a transaction....rounding it out.

I had my credit info stolen, looked online at my credit card a couple of weeks ago and saw a bunch of charges that were not mine. Was simple to take care of. Bank just cancelled card, refunded the money, and it's taken care of. Had a new card in 3 days.

While it sucks, was really simple of taking care of.

I feel your frustration. In Jan I had my cc skimmed, and had someone try to rack up charges on my CC all over town. Had to lock it down, call the police and have a new card reissued. In March I had my email account cyber hacked and attacked, and since I kept emails of my online reservations for my upcoming trip in Nov, they tried to hack into those accounts. Because of this I had to lock down my CC for a second time, get a new email address, and notify all of our friends and all my contacts of my new email address. So I hope that all goes well with your problems.

I'm sorry to hear you have to go through that! It happened to me last year! Since then i change my pin every month! Annoying but worth it! Plus now with most of our machines accepting the chip card now there is less chance of the skimming!

Hope it gets corrected quickly for you!

Yes, not really a big deal to get it straightened out. Just a big pain in the butt. In particular, since it's the second time. The first incident I really feel like was some sort of system glitch rather than skimming.....it was an ATM transaction in an Asian country and the amount was small. Still a pain in the butt none the less as it involved a few phone calls and a trip into the bank. Same for this most recent incident....a bunch of phone calls and a trip to the bank.

After the last call with bank security I got to thinking about places that I use my card. There is only one place that I use it that still takes your card and swipes it. It's my chiropractor.....there is no way it was them. I've been going there for over 10yrs and they are a practice of, now, 3 generations of chiros. Everybody in town knows the family.

Sorry to hear that. It was really bad in our small town a few years ago. We knew it was somewhere local because two of the four banks in town had signs up about it. If they put up signs, then it affected many people.
Both days I had used my debit card at the same two places and only those two places.
One was a convenience store, and the other was the Canadian Tire gas bar.
So it had to be one of those places. It was back when you still swiped so it was likely a skimmer.
It's never happened since, but it's still annoying to deal with and makes me suspicious of using my bank card some places. Most places around here use the chip now thankfully. I suppose it's just a matter of time before thieves figure out a way to get to those too.:headache:

From my understanding though, a place of business might not even know that someone put a skimmer on the machine. From what I read that is usually the case. The thieves just need enough time to slip a piece on the pinpad when nobody is looking.
Restaurants can be bad as well. If there's a dishonest employee they have enough time to skim your card when they take it in the back to process it. I far prefer places that bring the debit machine to the table.

My mom refuses to let her CC out of her sight. She will follow the person if she has to. Although she has never been scammed, she's had to have her CC replaced a couple of times.

I have been hit twice in 2008 & 2009 with my debit card. They took two withdrawls of $450 the first time and only one withdrawl of $450 the second time. I was at a resturaunt both times and my debit card was declined. Embarassing. I did get my money back but it's a pain:(
