OT: Babysitter not feeding an infant?? LONG

Well, I am interviewing someone else today, I just wanted to update. I just need to find someone who will take care of my kids the way I specify even if it is not necessarily what they would do with their kids. Some of you on here said that. That is why I didn't want to go with a big center. Ironically, when my oldest was born, I sent him to a big center to try to go back to work and they actually fed him TOO much. They said they didn't want the kids to be crying from hunger when the parents showed up. He was bottle fed and ate every 3-4 hours, but they would feed him like every 2 hours, and then he would throw up all over himself on the way home. I guess I just can't find a happy medium!
It's not even the fact now that she didn't feed them, its that I told her to do it and she knowingly did not. If they needed medication or something, how could I be guaranteed that she would give it to them? She obviously is going to do her own thing no matter what I tell her.
I will let you all know how it goes today.

Keep looking, there are wonderful sitters out there. I have six kids and I had to go through a few before we found one that we can trust (my kids ask to go there-even the teenagers!). Don't give up.

I feel your pain. I have to work and need child care. People don't sometimes uderstand. It is bad enough leaving your child (even for a few hours) never mind wondering if they are being fed, changed, etc.

Take care.

hi, i do in home daycare and yes, i would pull them...the first day their should have been at least one small snack...here is an example of yesterday for you, i will start at lunchtime
12:00-hotdogs, raw veggies and dip, crackers
2:15-party mix ( chips, pretzels, cheezies)
3:30-slushies(frozen juice, yogurt, ice) and yogurt with strawberries
4:45-celery and cheese whiz
oh yah, i also supply 99% of the food, i just started to ask the families to bring one snack to share for the week-just for summer-examples are box of crackers, couple of bags of popcorn, tub of yogurt.....it has been working awesome for me as my grocery bill is getting huge...water was continuous all day-i have a fridge with water and ice maker....freezies were also handed out a couple of times, they are great for cooling down and getting a little hydration
Some days i feel the kids want to eat non stop and other days not so much...i kinda have set times for snacks or parents get their kids home and they will not eat dinner...usually 1-2 small snack in the morning and 2 in the aternoon, sometimes 3...yesterday was well over 100 degrees here and most people do not have air conditioning around here so my house was hot...the kids swam and spent a lot of time in our basement, which is nice and cool....

I would definately look for someone else, i would never send my kids back to her..the first day i could understand as it wasnt all that long and honestly, i have some days the kids i look after(mine older kids included) just dont seem all that interested in snacking as often BUT the second day on top of the first seems really odd....good luck

Ack...hot dogs and popcorn? They are choking hazards. (I have been a licensed provider for years plus I am certified to teach First Aid and CPR.)

lutherlovr, hope you find someone that will take good care of your kids. They are out there. :)

hi there, yes i know they are choking hazards-the hotdogs were cut lengthwise and i didnt give out popcorn..i am the biggest worrier there is, i still want to cut up my teenage kids grapes...i worked for the school district and in a preschool, so i also have my first aid.......anyways, just wanted to clarify, as long as the precautions are there, there are ways to be safe.

I'm not picking on you -- really I'm not -- but, huh? According to your first post, you asked the parents to supply popcorn, but you aren't using it as a daycare snack? Color me confused. :confused3

If my daycare provider asked me to help supply the food ... well, I'd probably ask her why the money I'm paying her isn't sufficient to cover my kids' snack/meals. At any rate, I sure wouldn't want to find out the food I'm bringing isn't even passing my children's lips.

If I've misunderstood what you're saying, please correct me. If not, I have to say that it takes some nerve to ask parents to bring food, then not feed it to their kids.

I'm not picking on you-really I'm not-but oh my goodness. . . that's a lot of fod to serve the kids. I'm a hdcp too and I'm on the food program, so some of my expenses are reimbursed, but I wouldn't be able to afford to give the kids snacks every 1-2 hours. That's just way too much food. How do you get them to eat well at meal times if they're snacking so much during the day? And when does nap time fit in? For me, I serve breakfast at 8:00, lunch at 11:00, pm snack at 3, and they're all gone by 5. I use to do a am snack at 9:30 but I found that if I did that then they either didn't eat breakfast well, or didn't eat lunch well. So I only do 1 snack now.

Also-for everyone else that's criticizing her for asking her daycare parents to bring snacks-that's up to her. There are a LOT of home daycare providers and centers that don't provide food AT ALL. It all usually evens out in the rate the provider charges. For example a provider that serves meals may charge $20 more per week than someone who requires parents to provide meals. It all evens out in the end.

No offense, but I hope you're watching older kids. Some of the foods you listed are total choking hazards. Hotdogs, raw veggies like carrots, stringy celery, and junk food like chips are a total no-no in the US if you have a daycare. Here in Florida they check your menu for the month ( I believe) to make sure the kids are getting a balanced diet.

first, i dont like controversy and i never fight with anyone, i just want to clarify a few thing and then i wont come back...

The kids i look after are 5 or turning 5 in a few months, when i say raw veggies, i do cut up carrots, yes, but baby carrots in 6 long, skinny pieces, they are teeny tiny...celery is even smaller...

My snack sizes are very small, my youngest daughter had to have 3 surgeries on her bowel when she born and due to this, could only eat very small amount many times a day and this is what i do with the kids i look after, it just became a habit...

I do feed the kids popcorn, but they are all old enough...i have one little one that is almost 2 and she doesnt get any raw veggies or popcorn...not for at least a couple of years...

I am sorry i started something here, i still cut up my 11 years grapes, i worry constantly..i have parents telling me to relax..

i apologize again

What I find most disturbing is that she doesn't care about your wishes. What's up with that?

I agree to not bring the kids back. If you think something is wrong than you are probably right.

As for being friends, it is hard to make friends with young kids so I get how you feel. I've had many run-ins with parenting styles different from my own and I just make sure to never leave the kids alone with these folks. I guess I would probably schedule a flurry of visits/play-dates (me present of course) during the transition to put her at ease and prevent her (and her other allies/friends) from becoming defensive. I would also avoid discussing the situation with the people you know in common because it WILL get back and it WILL probably blow up on you. Just make the necessary changes and make some excuses like the ones another poster offered about expense... etc. and see what happens.

Please do not feel that you have to answer for what you are doing. Sounds like you care about your kids, your parents are happy, and you are interested. That speaks for itself. I would gladly provide one snack a week...my dd is 8 but there are a lot of days I send snacks during school for the whole class. Judgemental people usually judge anyone but themselves....so keep your chin up!

To the OP, please don't ake your children back there! I feel sure you probably aren't after all the previous posts and I haven't read all of them. I work in the area of child protective services. DON'T take them back there, please!

sound to me that you are a very caring caregiver and care greatly about your children ALL of them, all you were doing is responding to some one who asked for some advise, just know that not everyone is out to attack you, even though it looks like it like someone eles said chin up you are doing a great job and i would happily put my children with you and never worry.
