OT: Baby names you didn't name your child

I do think this is a personal choice and as you have to continue to use the name every day make sure YOU like it. That being said I am a labor and delivery nurse and some people out there name their children some strange things. I would recomment using fairly traditional spellings. Often people don't want their child's name to be common, but spelling it strangely does not make it special it makes it confusing. I try really hard not to be judgemental on this subject, but sometimes you want to look at the parent as you are writing the name down and say are you sure????? What are you thinking????? I don't mean to be rude, its just sometimes people are flat out making something up. I actually had a parent once who made their childs legal name Pepsi. (by the way my appoligies if this is your child or if you are friends or family, but come on you had to know this was odd) I really think that is just trying to be shocking or wierd and all though that might seem fun to you, your kid is stuck with it and it may not be so fun to them. Anyway if I have upset anyone I am sorry that is not my intent, I just never fail to be surprised and I have been doing this for many years. Now I have one of the most common names for my birth time--Jennifer and I do wish sometimes it was a little more original, but not like where I was conceived or what someone had for dinner, or something that they made up or Geniffer. Any way to answer the OP
We named our son Elijah Joel--both old and both biblical
we liked but did not use
Liam
Micah
Levi
for girls we are fond of
Emma
Claire
Tess
Olivia
Good luck in choosing a name, it is a difficult challenge, but above all enjoy and love your new addition :)

 Well, little "Pepsi" and I are deeply offended! The same goes for my DH, "Coke", and our other kids, "Seven-Up", "Slice" and our very energetic twins, "Mountain" and "Dew"!!!!

I always liked the name Dallas Blue for a boy, but my DH a HUGE Steeler fan would have died having a son named Dallas. We were blessed with 2 DD's.

First is Katharine Ann. I had always liked the name Kate, but wanted a "traditional" name. I am the only one that calls her Kate. She is Katie to everyone else. I didn't go in for unusual spellings, but changed the e to an a. Which is how Katharine Hepburn's was spelled. My favorite actress. I would have chosen Lyn, after my mother, as her middle name but Kate Lyn sounded like Caitlin. So, we went with Kate Ann.

Second is Maggie Lyn. We spelled Lyn like this because that is how my mother spells hers. Could not decide. Some names we liked were Grace, but put it with the last name Lewis and there are too many sssssss sounds. Vetoed. DH liked Kelly, but Aunt Kelly didn't sound right either. I liked Claire, DH thought about eclaires. Vetoed. Both liked Ellen, but still weren't sure, and didn't like Ellen Lyn, so had to come up with a new middle name. Both liked Maggie, but I wanted it to be short for something. DH didn't like Margaret. They brought her to me in the hospital, and we hadn't decided yet. DH was at home getting some sleep, and bringing big sister back and they asked what we were going to name her. I took one look at her and she was a "Maggie." There we not too many Maggie's around then, but now it is much more common.

If we had had boys, the names we had picked were Adam John or Joshua John. DH's middle name is John, and both sounded like football players as either just the first name or shortened initials of A.J. or J. J. I had always teased my DH that he would have had a son and named him Bradshaw or Lambert after his favorite Steeler players.

I do like tradional names like Elijah, Jereimiah. I come from a strong catholic background, and my family has all traditional names. I also really like Dana for a boy, but that is used for a girl more than a boy.

It is for you and your husband to decide, and whatever you do pick will suit him perfectly. Good luck and congratulations!! :sunny:

Mikayla and Jordan were the original girls names we had.

Brent, Brett or Garth were the boy names.

I like Emma and Jacob too as names.

With a last name like Jones, I wanted something a little different.

For our first son we named him

Payton Mackenzie Reed Jones

and for our second..

Brady-Michael Ehren Jones (Ehren is the German spelling for Aarron but it looks the closest to Erin, which is my sister's name.

Both times our families hated the names up until their births, now they love them.

(By the way, neither son was named for footballers Peyton Manning or Tom Brady)

For a girl I wanted Cordelia Brinn (My family DETESTED Cordelia but I loved it - always have even before Buffy the Vampire Slayer) Brinn was a combination of my two sisters Bridget and Erin and I was going to call her Cordy! but no luck.

I loved reading this thread!

We have a Robert Stephen III whose nickname is Roby (not Robby but ROBY) and a Dashiell Henry whose nickname is Dash (just like The Incredibles).

DH wanted to name our firstborn DS Artemus, Horatio or Race. I said "no", "no" and "no".

Dash was going to be Dashiell Ellery until my eighth month of pregnancy when we decided on Henry. I love the name Henry and I'm glad we changed it at (nearly) the last minute.

Girls names we'd considered:

Olivia (from Olivia de Haviland in Gone With the Wind)
Grace
Camellia

Our last name is such that you have to really be careful of the names you put with it--otherwise the outcome could be awful!

:flower: I have a cousin named Dash Frances (High School Senior this year). His brother is Skylar James. He was the first Skylar I ever knew. He is now 20 and there are so many Skylars out there these days! LOL :goodvibes Rebecca

I've always loved names and dh would pretty much go along with whatever names I picked, so these are the names that were on the list.

DD1: Named her Cailey Mary-Jane (Mary Jane was dh's mom's name and we had no other girls names picked out)
Had she been a boy she would have been Sean Thomas or Thomas Russell

DS1: Named him Thomas Joseph (after dh and no other boys names considered)
Had he been a girl: Rhiannon Christine, Shauna Christine, or Bethany Christine

DD2: Named her Ashtyn Christine (yes I now know Ashtyn is a boy's name, but had only heard it on girls until after she was born)
Other girl names considered: Lindsey Christine, Mallory Christine, Rhiannon Christine, Bethany Christine, Lacee Christine

Had dd2 been a boy: Christopher Ryan, Christopher Russell, Russell Raymond, or Zachary Russell (Russell and Raymond are family names)

Our only child DD8 is Cassandra Marie (Cassie is what she goes by).
I like names that can be casual as a child and more formal as an adult.
When she skates ( she's a figure skater ) she likes to be annouced as Cassandra.

Had she been a boy she would have been Desmond Edward ( Dezi ).

I've always loved the name Cameron for a boy or girl. Another girl name dh vetoed for our dd was Carly. I thoght that was so cute. :goodvibes

DH is Jim, so is his dad, and so was his dad. My GF was also a Jim. My 4 1/2 y.o. nephew is also James, named after my GF. So our son is named after my GF, both his first and last name. I wanted to call him by his middle name, but my DH was dead-set against it. He had a thing with DS being called Jim. Also, his GF passed away two months before the baby was born, so it was especially important to him b/c our son is the only boy to carry on our last name.
If we would have had a girl, her name would have been Annabelle Olivia after my DM's great aunt(who was like her grandmother) and one of DH's GGM.

My baby is due in December and this what I came up with:

Girl: Andi-Anne Chantal, Asha Chantal, Ava Chantal or Alisha Chantal

Boy: Matthew Achilles, Marcus Julian, Jason Marcus III or Mason Eli

I'm really not sure yet!

Oldest son's name Adam Jeffrey 17
middle child dd Erin nicole 7 1/2
Yougest son cooper Andrew 3 1/2
I love the names because they are not that trendy.

I love reading the names everyone picked out. I have 2 DS and 1DD.

Jared Michael (first time I heard Jared was the actor Jared Leto)
Justin Andrew (Andrew for DH) we had several first names picked out for him..Ryan, Joseph, Jack
Caitlin Mary (I call her Cate...named after DH's godmother and my grandmother) :flower:

I had the advantage of seeing my daughter's smiling face before I named her. She is adopted and when I got her referral picture I abandoned all my planned names and decided to call her Gemma. I had planned on Lauren or Esme - the name "Gemma" was far down on my list. But as soon as I saw her picture I knew she was born to be Gemma Xuan. Nobody will be able to pronounce her middle name - but she'll definitely have the coolest middle initial in school, and I can see a day coming when she'll refer to herself as "Gemma X."

For DS, my DH came home from dinner with his co-workers and said "I love the name Jack, it has to be Jack. We'll name him John and call him Jack." To which I replied, "Why don't we just name him Jack?" DH said "Are we allowed to do that?" :rotfl:

The only other boy name I/we considered was Benjamin, but we decided on Jack at about 18 weeks. His middle name was up for grabs until the actual delivery. I wanted William after DH middle name, and his grandfather and uncle's first name. DH wanted Keiran b/c our last name is Irish. After 13 hours of labor, I won. ;) The girl name we had picked out was Madeline Christine or Madeline Emma. Loved the name Madeline, "Madison" was popular at the time, but now I see Madeline's everywhere, too.

When we were pregnant with DD, again the gender was a suprise, but we also didn't tell anyone what names we'd picked out. We figured that it would be difficult to offer negative views on a name when you were meeting your new grandchild/niece or nephew for the first time. DH picked out the boy name Paul Bernard after our two dad's. Ick on Bernard, but I could "live" with Paul. I made a list of all the girl names I liked and then handed it to DH. The ONLY one that made the cut was Meredith. We both loved the name. I chose Anita for her middle name b/c it was my Grammy's middle name (her first name was Gladys and she hated it). I call my DD Meredith. DH, MIL, and daycare call her Merry. I hate it, it's like Merry Christmas, and MIL is MARY, too close. I threaten/ bully everyone else in the world into using her given name. :rolleyes1

Our first child was born 3 days after xmas. Nicholas it was. If he was a girl he would have been Rhiannon.
Our second everyone had my husband convinced it was a girl we had Abigail. Well we had a boy who had no name for 24 hrs. He ended up in the nicu and they asked me what his name was that they would take good care of him there. I had to admit he did not have one. That next morning my husband came in and I was in tears he said how about Austin? Austin it is. Very healthy I might add.
Our third child I was convinced was another boy. We had picked out Whyat but we were surprised and it was a girl. Well I had picked out a girls name just in case we had another unfortunate event. Ainsley it is.
Good luck in your choosing. What ever you pick will be special I am sure of that.

I wanted to name DD Autumn Breeze and call her Breezi, but DH nixed that idea. He said that the full name sounded like an air freshener or (forgive me) douche scent and that the nickname sounded like a stripper.

No offense meant to anyone who was lucky enough to be allowed to name her child Autumn Breeze or Breezi, because I love the name to this day no matter what DH (or anyone else) thought of it. :teeth:

I also liked the name Penelope Hope, but again, it was a no-go.

My wife was set on the name Yardleigh, until I mentioned that it would end up being asked over and over: "How's it measure up, Yardleigh?"

Always consider the nicknames, abbreviations, and just plain rude comments that people can come up with.

My little boy is Jackson Ryan
My little girl is Karis (sounds like Paris) Maddigan ( my name is Kari)
If I had had another boy it would have been Harrison.
I also like Georgia, Karisen, and Ella Kayt for girls.
