OT: Baby names you didn't name your child

I'm pregnant with my 2nd child - another boy. My husband and I had a really difficult time compromising on our first son's name and it's even harder this time around. He vetos most names because he knows someone with that name and doesn't care to name his children the same. He also wants a "strong" name but the criteria for that is only something "he" can decide! :confused3:

He thinks I am too concerned about the way the whole name "sounds" when you put it together. Ie, I vetoed one of his suggestions because it created a double consonant when put together with our last name and saying it all together sounded like you were stuttering.

I'm due in early Sept :hourglass and am looking for suggestions and possiblities or even jumping points for us to brainstorm more!

If you wouldn't mind sharing what other names you considered for your children (girls too! I'm curious ;) ) please post here.

Thanks!

I don't have much for advice - just wanted to say good luck.

When we were first expecting, didn't have too much trouble with a boy's name - DH, his brother, his father, and grandfather all have he same initials (DAS), so I thought it would be nice to continue that if we had a son, but I didn't want any of the D names alreay in the family (Dave, Doug, Dennis) - we both easily agreed on "Duncan". We had a little more trouble with girls - I like Brianna and Rachelle, DH liked Rachel -we ended up deciding on Rebecca (Thank goodness because there seemed to be a boom with "Brianna").

So - 1st baby was a girl - named Rebecca. 2nd baby was boy - still liked Duncan, so he's Duncan. I can't even remember what the girl's name was that we had chosen 2nd time. We were surprised at delivery with both (now 8, 5), so we had to have names picked for both boy and girl.

I totally understand that double initial thing ... I don't like it (although some names may be ok with it) ... I just don't like it.

I have two girls (4ys and almost 2yrs). With our first I had myself totally convinced I was having a boy and he was going to be Owen David or Ethan David. Then someone at work had an Owen three months before me, so I was for Ethan and dh was for Owen. Well, needless to say it turned out to be a girl and we were not prepared when the doctors asked us what her name was (which I still feel bad about  ). So we reviewed a list (Claire, Sarah, etc) and we decided on Julia Beatrice, as I always loved the name Julia. This name suits her to a tee I might add

Our second one we really had no idea either what we were having. This time again it was going to be Owen David. I liked some other names, but dh always vetoed those too. For a girl we really liked Hannah. The others on our list were Olivia, Grace, Sarah, and Ella - this is a name I love). So right up until the night before we had her (a planned c-sec) it was going to be Hannah. My dad doesn't like that name (he thinks it sounds old), so dh came home and started looking through the baby book frantically for a name ... which I said was silly because I liked the name and that was too bad if he (my dad) didn't ;) He's still love her! But that night I had a dream that I had two little girls and the littlest one was named Olivia. So needless to say I HAD to go with that name and she became Olivia Pearl. She is totally an Olivia too! princess:

I found it much harder the second time around. DH is a police officer and I am a teacher so we have MANY names that we just couldn't do because of previous experience with them. Like I used to LOVE Cole ... but then I taught a Cole that was hell on wheels!!! Saying that name over and over drove me nuts

Good luck ... I'm sure whatever you choose will work well for you guys!!

Kerri :sunny:

We had a horrible time with DD#2....we loved DD#1's name so much we wanted to make sure our second was equally as good.

The day we came home from the US with our first we named her....it took us all night but we did it...no backups or anything...

our second took us a lot LONGER...and it was changed several times!!

Samantha Paige
Haley Nicole....

But for a boy I liked Drew, Brandon (we met in Brandon) I can't even remember....

good luck!

eta - I guess you asked what we didn't name them....well Natalie, Isabelle were both TOP contenders....that didn't make the cut!

Our son (now 12) was going to be Austin, but we were still unsure even after he arrived (we didn't find out whether he was a boy or a girl - if he was a girl, he'd have been Megan). So when he was 1.5 days old we finally named him!!! LOL I felt bad, but it's such a HUGE decision! His name is Riley (my great-grandfather's middle name). And now I couldn't imagine him being named anything else!
We did find out what our daughter was pre-birth but it was still very hard. We had it narrowed to about 3 or 4 by the time she was born. One of the 'final 4' was Grace. She is quite clutzy, so I am thankful we didn't go with that name! :rotfl: It would have been quite ironic. She ended up Karly.

Boy names were harder for us. We had a girl her name is Harper Jo. A boy was going to be Hayden Michael.
We must have had something for H's!! :rotfl:

We liked Carter and would have used that but we had a girl. I think Jack, Jake-all sort of manly names. We thought about Ella, Sophia, Olivia, Chloe for a girl but something about Zoë appealed to us--so we went with it. Turns out it worked out perfectly b/c Zoë means "life" and we had a tough delivery and we almost lost her. She fought back and showed such a will to live--the name is perfect. It still suits her--she is definately full of life. Good luck finding a name. It's a hard decision!

My name is Patrice and my husband's name is Peter, so we decided to keep with the P's and we named our son (after his dad) Peter Jacob, but we call him PJ. We knew we were having a boy, but we tossed around the names Juliana, Paige, Peyton, and Piper just in case.... ;) Other names that were in the running were Alister, Jack, Henry, Parker (which we DO plan to name our next child - boy or girl!), and Riley.

The great name debate between husband and wife can be endless! When I was expecting my dd we could not agree on names. Once we FINALLY agreed on a name, we couldn't agree on a middle name! My mom still reminds me that we should have named dd her pick..Mikayla Madison. We named her Kayla Renee much to everyone's disapointment. It really should be a decision between you and your husband. Your child probably won't like whatever name you give when they get older, none of us did, did we? Names I liked for boys were:
Caleb Gregory
Gregory Lee
Ethan
Jamison
Christopher Ryan
Jordan for either girl or boy until I realized how popular it was
Wesley
Lucas
Joshua
Zach not Zachary

girl names
Emily
Grace
Emma
Grayson
Madison (glad I didn't use it too popular right now)
Katie
Autumn (I don't know why I just like it)
Courtney
Elizabeth
Bella Rose

Good luck on finding a name that makes you happy! I was also very afraid I would pick out a name and it wouldn't fit my daughters personality once she was here, but Kayla suits her just fine. She definitely isn't a Madison. Grayson would have suited her though. You'll do fine!

My son's name is Brian Matthew. Brian actually means "strong", so maybe that will qualify as a good name for your husband. Matthew is "gift from God" and is my husband's first name.

My father and sister told us before he was born that they didn't like that name....too many Brians that they didn't like. Well too bad for them :earboy2: Now of course he's the only Brian that counts!

So just a little advice. Don't share your names w/ anyone! If you do, then they will feel the need to tell you what is wrong with your choice.

I totally agree!!

Our boy name (both times) was Nicholas Iain. We had girls, so we never got to use it and probably won't unless I can convince dh to go for a third which is not working.

I understand about the double consonant sound. I really loved Josie for our second dd, but our last name starts with J, and when you put the 2 names together, it kind of sounded like an adult film star name.

I adore the name Marley for a boy or girl, but dh vetoed that both times around.

Good luck! Naming is such a responsibility! Fortunately, both of my dds fit right into their names. We have a Miranda Catherine and a Veronica Megan (aka Ronnie). princess:

Could she pick two trendier names? :rotfl:

I love boy names that sound like last names - Cooper, Duncan, Parker, etc. You just have to worry that they're going to turn into girl's names... I like Evan and Logan, but now they're girl names around here!

We have two girls, and knew that they were girls before they were born:

Natalie Maryn (pronounced Mare-in, my Mom's name is Mary)
Paige Noelle (she was born in December)

Other names I liked:

Sophia
Grace
Riley
Annie
Laurel
Marissa

Thought we would have more children and would use more family names, but it's looking like we are done! LOL

Boys names I liked:

Austin
Zachary
Ryan
Joseph (Joey, Joe)
Jake
Thomas (Tommy, Tom)

Good luck! I love picking names

Well if I would have had a girl her name would have been Kaitlin Elise. :)

But I had (3) boys: Parker Vincent
Jonathan Michael
Asa Cameron

I have one soon to be 5 yr old DS. We had one name picked for a boy. I think choosing a boy's name is more difficult. His name is Alexander James(defender or protector of mankind). He is called by "Alexander". If someone does call him "Alex" it seems they are talking about someone else. If he wants to be called "Alex" when he grows up we decided that will be his choice. We don't have any problems with that. Sometimes boys names seemed to be shorten when they go out in society. He does introduce himself as Alexander(it fits).

Good Luck and Congratulations :flower:

:) We just have one child so far, a daughter. From day one in my pregnancy, I just knew she would be an Emily. LOL Hubby didn't get a choice in it although he did choose her middle name, Marie. I didn't even realize that he had chosen something until he announced it to family. LOL Probably a good thing, because I might have vetoed it. LOL If she had been a boy, I really liked Spencer. Hubby and Everyone else didn't care for it.
:) If we ever have a boy, hubby has hinted about naming it after himself. His name is Jamison Jason....too many J's for me! :sad2: It's not my style though. I have thought of using James as a middle name though. :flower: Rebecca

We weren't sure if dd3 was going to be a boy or girl :confused3 . I simply let my dh pick our daughter's first name (Caitlyn) while I handled the funky spelling and added my mom's first name (Regina)...Caitlyn Regina is her name and she is thrilled to have Nana's name as her "second name" :flower: ...she is such a sweetie pie!!!

I like for girls (some are already taken by our family members so we can't use them :goodvibes ): Emma, Elizabeth, Natalie, Julianna, Sierra, Emily, Rachel, Sarah, Olivia, Sage and Sophia. A friend used: Holland & Haven for her two girls!!

Boys: Jacob Michael is my fave without a doubt! (my dad & brothers names are Jay and dh's brother is Michael...it covers all the bases!). I also like Devon and Jack, Peter (dh's fathers name) and Nicholas. We have a Noah, Nathan, Jeremy, Christopher, David, Douglas and Sam in our family.

I read somewhere's that the first name is best if it is the same number of syllables as the last name...like "Devon Meyer" or "Elizabeth Annopolis". I guess it could be a guideline if you needed one. Didn't work out that way with our dd!!! :rotfl: :rotfl:

We have combined 18 nieces and nephews, so it has cut down the choices somewhat!

Congratulations & Good Luck

We've always had a boy name, so of course we had girls :))

Our boy name (and I feel like Monica giving Rachel her girl name here) is Prescott Grant Duncan.

Prescott's my dad's family name, Grant is from the president whom dh is related to, and Duncan because there was a woman who brought the duncan clan from scotland and settled them in nova scotia ages ago and kept the family alive, so all the descendants (of which my husband is one) had the middle or last name of duncan after that.

We were never quite sure which of the names would be the first name and which would be the middle names, but as it turns out, it's a moot point!

It would help if we knew what your first boy's name is...

Congradulations on your pregnancy!

We decided on Nadia for our dd.
But that wasn't until we were a month away from birth.
Until then, she was going to be Paris..and for a boy..we were going with Ethan Thomas.. (thomas is my hubby's name..) until we realized that was initials..E.T. (LOL)
