I'm thinking of changing jobs. Kohls is coming to our town. Can anyone who works for them tell me if they are flexible with hours? Also if they have blackout dates for vacations and personal days? How is there pay? When do u get raises? Thanks.

Me, my father, mother and sister have all worked part time jobs at Kohl's. You will most likely start at minimum wage (or close to it) and will have blackout dates (I know around the holidays). DDad worked at the same Kohls for 10 years as a second job--was making close to $14/hour when he left. Has since gotten bored (been about 2 yrs) and wants another job, so went back to the same Kohls. They were going to start him out close to minimum wage--I think like $8/hr. Of course, all of the above info is for part time. My sis and I both only worked there through summers and on college breaks. It may be different for full time.

I wouldn't say it was a bad job. My criteria of what I wanted for a 3 month job at 22yrs old is much different than what I want now. I worked point of sale during the summers and worked on the back dock (unloading boxes) on my winter breaks.

ETA: DDad did not take the job at $8/hr.

I worked there just a few hours a week for over three years. I quit last year as a birthday gift to myself!

I think that your experience will vary based on your management team. (Typically a store manager, several assist. managers and many other supervisors) When I first started there, it was a new store and I think the managers were out to prove themselves, so everything was rigid and by-the-book. As time went on, it got more laid back, but still largely depended upon who was in charge that day.

Schedules were fairly flexible. Even though they told us there was no time off from mid-November thru end of December I had no problem getting the time I wanted. The only other times they didnt allow vacation was during inventory.

Pay starts at minimum wage (or within 50 cents) and you get pitiful raises every six months to a year. The discounts are excellent though, and that was primarily why I stayed there as long as I did.

I think every store will be unique and will mostly depend on the people you're working for/with. Hope that helps!

Thanks to everyone for posting. I currently work retail and need a new career path. I thought switching to Kohls would be a better solution, but it sounds its going to be the same. I really can't afford to make less then wait i get paid at now.

Thanks for the info. I don't think it will be a good move.

Retail is going to be pretty much the same lots of places.

Do you have a Costco near you? They seem to be one place that's rated a little better than others in terms of how they treat employees.

I work part time at Pier One as a manager and love it there! It's great that you are constantly interacting with customers vs standing and ringing a cash register. The company is great and treats its employees well ($50 P1 bucks at Christmas; cash bonuses on certain months if you go over target; good benefits; great discount; incentives, etc). They pay according to experience (every store is different) but I do think they start higher than minimum wage for associates. Plus their holiday hours are not horrendous like some places. Great place to work!

I know several people who have left the company to go to Kohl's and then came back several months later. Retail is similar in some ways as most pay minimum wage, little or no benefits for part timers (most retail jobs are p/t). Lot's of hard work and customer who think you are their personal maids. Raises are usually small and happen normally once a year.

The biggest complaint I heard of Kohl's is that they promise full time and then cut back to 10- 20 hrs a week. Depending on the mgmt. staff could make the work place fun or hostile.

My mom works at Kohls. They are very flexible with scheduling, which is nice. It is not one of those stores where you just stand around looking for customers to help. They keep their employees busy all of the time.

I know that they hire you in as either full or part time. But as in most stores, full time is very hard to come by. Legally they cannot hire you in as full time and not give you full time hours. At least, that is true in Michigan. Maybe it is different depending on the state.
