OT-Anyone have LASIK surgery before?

Kristin-I'm having my surgery done in Hinsdale. I'm not nervous--yet . They told me that I would be given Valium to relax me--I hope it's strong enough!

I had lasik done about 7 years ago. It was the best money I've ever spent. I was a -9 in each eye, my doctor corrected me to 20/15 and I've stayed there ever since.

I had no apprehensions about the surgery, which freaked out my mom.

My DH is freaked out too! We watched a movie during the consultation and he almost passed out!

The valium is great! It isn't too strong but enough to take the edge off. Don't be nervous! It is probably more stressful for any family members watching. DH watched mine on a monitor from the hall while it was done and almost fainted but he still wants to have the procedure himself! Good luck!

Angela, be sure to take the Valium 5 to 10 minutes before the proceedure. I took mine at home and in 10 mins was flat on my face in bed not wanting to move. If you're not used to take meds like that, wait till you get there.

And I took mine 5-10 minutes before, and it didn't hit me until about 5-10 minutes after I was done the surgery. I wanted it to work during the surgery!! So I would suggest taking it about 15-20 minutes before.

I had mine done about four weeks ago - it was wonderful. Take the valium a good 30 minutes prior to the procedure .... I could never tell any effect from it but during the procedure my doctor said she knew that I was "under the effect" because I'm not normally that calm.

Mine was $3600 (I'm in Houston, Texas) and was completely blind prior to this. My contact lens number for both eyes was a -7.5 and now I'm 20/15 in the left eye and 20/25 in the right.

No problems - just go home after the surgery and sleep and relax all night - leave the goggles on until you get up the next morning - keep putting drops in all night as well and for the first couple of days - be obsessive about the drops and you'll love the experience!!!

I've worn glasses for 33 years - can't believe I waited this long...... Good luck!

Well, everyone's different. I'm not used to taking meds like that. I'm someone who can get drunk off of cough syrup .

I would recommend this to anyone! I had it done 2 years ago. My vision was 20/400!!! I had to have 2 procedures since my vision was so bad. I wore contacts... but we go to waterparks a lot and I'm always worried swimming that I would lose a contact. They did the first surgery, gave me temporary contacts w/new prescription and waited about 6 months then had the 2nd procedure to get the rest. I am now 20/15 and love swimming w/o any worries... love getting up in the morning and not having to mess w/anything!! It only cost me about $1500 total!!! My ex had it done when it first came out.. ex fil, ex bil,ex sil, my sister... they've all had it done and love it!!

Some folks have talked about needing an adjustment within the first year, but I never did. It's been great. I had mine done about 2 1/2 years ago.

It was probably just precaution. I had an eye disease when I was a kid and had to take steroid drops 10x's a day for years. I had a lot of scar tissue and was always told I would never be able to have this procedure to begin with. but they also thought I'd be blind by age 10! Thank god and technology advancements!!

Had mine done in April 2002. The most wonderful thing I have ever spent money on. I had worn glasses since I was 7 and due to horrible astigmatism(only 2% of the people had worst astigmatism than me), could not wear contacts until I was a soph. in high school. My optomitrist had talked to me about the procedure for about 1 year before I had it done. I refused until I had finally had enough of not being able to wear my contacts due to spring allergies! My optomitrist referred people to Dr. Wolfson in Atlanta. He is a specialist in the LASIK field. Due to amount of astigmatism, mine cost $2500 per eye and I had to have the "touch-up" done. Well worth the money and time. Only thing that freaked me out was that I had always heard that you would be able to "read the clock" when they sat you up---I couldn't read the clock and almost lost it!!! The nurse asked me what was wrong and I told her. She told me that they had used more drops to get my eyes to dialate than they usually did, and that I would be able to see the next morning (due to computer problems, the surgeries were running behind, this was 8:30 at night). The next morning was AMAZING. I could see! Sometimes I am still amazed that after all those years of not being able to see without glasses/contacts, I am now 20/20. The first time I read the 20/20 line on the eye chart, I almost cried.

For anyone considering this surgery--there is nothing better than being able to see without any aids!!

Oops! Sorry about the late update, but here goes...

The surgery went just perfect! It took approximately 15 minutes for the entire procedure! I remember following a little red dot with my eyes, there was sort of a funny smell from the laser reshaping my corneas, but other than that, NO PAIN AT ALL! When I got up from the table I could see the clock in front of me! Things were a little fuzzy, but I was told to keep my eyes closed and go home and take a nap. After a four hour nap, I awoke to find that I could REALLY SEE!

My vision was a little hazy/fuzzy for the first few days, and that has totally gone away! I have 20/20 vision now! My left eye is slightly stronger than my right eye, but I was told that my vision has yet to completely stabilize, so the right eye could improve. If it doesn't I'll have to go back in for a retouch, but I have NO COMPLAINTS whatsoever.

It was the best $3000 I've ever spent!!
