We grew some corn in our vegetable patch this summer and I was wondering if anyone knows how to tell when it is ready to eat? We have no clue and just stand there looking at these 3 stalks with 2 big corn each wondering when we can throw them on the BBQ and put on the butter. Anyone here know? Thanks!

Sweet corn is ready when the silks (the hairs coming out of the tip) turn dark brown and are dried. Enjoy!

As you are in Toronto, get your corn before the racoons do.
We tried to grow corn last summer, and the racoons got it before we did.

Thanks so much everyone. Our corn then isn't ready because the silks aren't brown or dried yet. We do live in TO and racoons didn't even cross our mind. Maybe the scary sight of how our pumpkin vines have taken over absolutely everything in our veggie patch will scare them. It's like a horror movie out there with pumpkin vines all over the place and 3 corn stalks poking up. I had no idea that the pumpkin vines would grow so much! Somehow our peppers and tomatoes are still surviving..Can you tell this is our first time growing anything.
Ham I have to say, your veggie garden looks amazing! Your veggie plants must be in heaven over there. I don't even see a single weed!

Can't take credit for the image just found it on the net. I post images to add value to my posts.

The DW & DD 9 have some tomatoes and peppers growing in pots on the deck. They have the green thumbs.

Loved the name of the topic. Great idea for a vegetable to grow at home.

We grow corn. We like to eat it on the young side of the ripeness curve. We peel back the husk just enough to see if they are starting to turn yellow. We find they are not as starchey if picked a little less ripe.
