Ok I signned up for the Wilton I cake decoarating class at Michaels Craft store and just wanted to know if anyone had ever taken a class like this before?? If so what items will I need.. I do plan to take Class II and III after this one... They have a 150 peice kit for $120 and it would be $60 with the 50% off coupon should I go ahead and but that??

Usually there is a Kit for class #1, it has the book to practice on and everything so you'll need it first. The kit that you're talking about is great once you start decorating cakes, it's got a ton of tips and things, but start with the basic cake decorating kit for class #1 first....you'll soon learn what tips you use more...etc.

Yup you just need the kit for the 1st class, b/c it has basic stuff (like the practice board) that will carry on to the next couple of classes.

Thanks for the post.. I just did not want to spend $25 on the basic kit and then need more for the class like colors, tips, boards, ect... I know lots of people had suggested the big kit but I wanted to make sure I needed it first before I spend the $60.

So did you go to the class??? I just kinda wanted to know what to look forward to??

I took course 1 and have been selling cakes since then!! It is a very expensive hobby and highly addictive!!!! :goodvibes

I have probably 600 dollars worth of stuff now and I have over 40+ pans... :teeth:

I did my first wedding cake this past weekend and it was very stressful but the bride loved it!!! I made good money from it too!!

You are going to possibly need the following for course 1:the kit, colors, extracts, cake mixes, icing ingredients (crisco, meringue powder, butter and almond extract, vanilla, powdered sugar), plastic clown heads, a shaped pan of some sort, cupcake liners, bigger spatulas, paper, pen, parchment paper, cake leveler to torte cakes, cake boards, foil, cooling racks and more that I cannot think of right now.

Oh and BTW it is VERY ILLEGAL to sell character cakes that are copyrighted they are only meant for home use and Disney for one is NOTORIUS about busting cake decorators selling thier pans and images, so BE CAREFUL...A cake decorator nearby got caught last year selling a Minnie Mouse cake and she was fined 10,000 bucks ...!!!!

I took all three classes about 7 years ago - you will have so much fun chatting with the other students and you learn so much!

I would start with the smaller kit first and make sure it's something you really want to do - then if you do, get the larger kit with the coupon from the next class. Or put it on your Christmas wish list. After I took two classes I really wanted (and needed) the Wilson caddy for all my stuff - it is wonderful with all the openings the right size for my Wilton stuff. :cloud9: Another item for your wish list :teeth: I love it when I start a new hobby before Christmas! :smooth:

And it doesn't matter one bit if you have duplicate tips - actually the common ones you will ultimately need 2 or 3 of the same one. (I think I have 4 size 4s!) You often need the same tip for different colors of icing and don't need to keep cleaning in the middle of all your creativity!

I did add alot of my tips at the Outlet Center - I think it's a store called Kitchen Collection, sometimes they have tips there. Also, WalMart (back in the craft section) often has them on clearance. If you ever get the chance to buy the grass making tip - go for it, it's really cool.

I have never sold a cake but I always win First Place ($50) at my husband's company picnic! :cheer2:

Here is a great thread about this from a while back with lots of info:

Maybe you can PM scarlett873 or thelionqueen
to ask her what tips & supplies to buy.

Also, I've seen the Wilton kits on eBay for cheap. I think many people who realize they aren't going to continue decorating sell the kits they've used in class.
