OT: Anyone do any "active" family vacations?

I am hoping to do Africa with DS5 next year (if I can save up the huge amount of $$ it will cost).

Just wondering if anyone has done any "active" family vacations and how they worked out. There are many publications like Backroads and Thomson that offer family trips to great and educational places like Costa Rica, Galapagos, etc. Anyone with any experience with these tour operators? The offerings look fabulous.
