OT~Animal lovers~ I need to ask about prices on two pups

Not sure about the size of the breeds that you are thinking about. However we currently have a pure breed shi tzu and and Shi poo (shi tzu-poodle). Our son was 2 years old when we got our Shi poo and 6 when we got the other. Both dogs are gentle with kids. The shi poo is very playful but is also laid back when he wants to, he has picked a favorite person in the house but has never been agressive to another person. Our shi tzu is not a very active dog, he is actually quite lazy. He to have picked a favorite in the house and it is me. I am only saying that because he is not agressive towards people however if another animal comes near me, he can become very agressive towards it. Also poodles are know to be more out going then Shi tuz. Both dogs have had great health and no real problems. However since our Shi-poo is know almost 14yrs old, he is 80% deaf and 50% blind. Not sure of the cost since its been many years since I had to pay. I paid 450(pet store) for our shi poo and $250 for our Shi Tzu (breeder, but not registered).

Hate to sound like a broken record, but.....everyone is pretty much on target with the little breeds. Poodles ( not the standard sizes ) tend to be one person dogs, and can be suprisingly agressive towards anyone other than the "one" they love! Small dogs are fragile, and can have more health problems, but that goes for large dogs also. ( I swear I built the addition on my vet's building w/just my dog's visits!) That being said, ALL dogs need a home, whether from a breeder or a shelter. Honestly, from a breeder you have a better chance of seeing what the dog's personality will be if the parents are present, pure bred or mixed. Small dogs are harder to house train ( they really cant hold it more than a few hours ) and are hard to see when you walk!!! I also tend to have sucker written across my forehead, and is seen only by people at shelters ( this is how I ended up with 3 cats!) :rolleyes1 so they would already be in my home by now!!

I vote for a rescue dog!:) "designer" dogs, or dogs bred to be small or a mix (schnoodles, cockapoos etc) are overly priced (anywhere from $1000-$3000) and most of the time, they have attention issues, or they get sick very easily.

My dog (yellow lab/ grey house mix) is from a program called "Save-a-Sato", which is a program that takes strays from Mexico, brings them to the US, takes care of them and feeds them back to a healthy weight, and then puts them up for adoption. In total (not including the 9k in medical fees when a cop HIT MY DOG ON PURPOSE because he got out) I spent $50 for my dog, $25 for the adoption and $25 for his collar/leash/tags.

Please concider a rescue! :)

Sort of on my soapbox....
We also have three rescue cats, all black (the hardest to place)

Why are black cats the hardest to place? We have a black rescue cat - I specifically wanted black so her hair wouldn't show up on my black clothes. :goodvibes

My son and his fiance work rescues on weekends, and they said that black cats are the hardest to place, because of a "bad luck" stigma attached to them. Remember the old superstition, don't let a black cat cross your path? Some people are just superstitious about that.
Get this...most shelters will not adopt out a black cat, in the weeks leading up to Halloween, becuase people will get one for the "Halloween" aspect, and then abandon them. Then there's always the fear (I've been told), that they will be used in ritual animal sacrifices!!

My three babies are wonderful additions to the family, and are all very sweet (well, except for Binks, who likes to bite ankles {everyone is fair game!})!

Good morning to everyone! I hope this e-mail finds you doing well.

I'd like to share some information with you that I'd like you to share with as many people as you can as well. All you have to do is send this e-mail and then ask your friends and family to do the same. Not a chain letter - just reaching out to help everyone be aware of a huge, ugly problem regarding puppies.

This Friday Oprah's show goes over the whole issue of Puppy Mill puppies. Spread the word and please take what they are saying to heart. Mills are one of the worse forms of animal cruelty that there is and, unfortunately, people just don't understand where those cute puppies in the window actually come from.

So, again, please watch or tape or DVR / TIVO the show but tell as many people as you can about it too!

Thanks!

Are you in the market for a puppy? Watch the Oprah Winfrey show on
Friday, April 4th! (9am or 11pm). Friday’s episode is all about buying puppies and dogs!

Actions to take after the show
1.) Post more information in the SAME free online publications. Give people more information on how they can help, how they can avoid puppy mills, and how they can get involved with Best Friends’ campaign. Below is a sample ad:

Did you see Oprah Winfrey’s April 4th show about puppy mills?
Go to www.network.bestfriends.org/truth to learn how to make sure your dog doesn’t come from a puppy mill

From what I've been told- black cats AND black dogs are the hardest to place- from a black Great Dane down to an all black Chihuahua. And as a rescuer (former- I'm retired as of this year- please, let me make it through spring without bringing any babies home!)- I've seen that to be a fact. I think people just don't 'love' the color on an animal- they prefer color, patterns, stripes or spots versus 'just black'.

Me- I love just black!

And OP- woohoo! Great idea :D

OK, anyone mind if I get on the soapbox? I work a full time job and I am the President of a Humane Society in a small depressed area. Our small board work long hours fundraising and caring for dogs and cats that no one wants anymore.

So, I beg you to please consider adopting from a shelter. All of these new "designer" dogs are being bred by inexperienced breeders and will soon begin developing genetic problems as a result.

I have 3 wonderful shelter dogs - one of which is small and loving. He was rescued at age 8 and is now almost 17. Rudy is my devoted companion and it breaks my heart to think of him not being here. Somehow rescue dogs just seem to appreciate more the love you give them.

Almost done... to the person who keeps their 2 dogs outside and is considering a small "inside" dog - why are they outside? I have a small house with 3 dogs (2 large), 3 cats and a rabbit (all rescued). Yeah, it's a little more work but when you love them it doesn't seem so hard.

Thanks for listening.

Kathy
