Hi! Has anyone been to American Girl Place in Chicago? We are thinking about going and are wondering if there is anything really close to AGP that would be good for my DH and DS5 to do while my DD and I are there! Thanks in advance for any input!

There is a Lego store a couple of blocks south in a "mall" can't remember what the store front it called. There is a Disney store on the way there.

We went a month ago and my 9 year son was fine with checking the place out. He actually said he wanted to see what it looked like - probably heard us talking about it so much. I heard that they loan out game boys????

Have fun! We live about 3 hours away and try to make an annual trip to Chicago.

We are planning this sime type of trip in May for my kids birthdays. THey are 5 and 3. Dh and DS are HUGE baseball fans. So while dd and I hit the AG store, they are going to a cubs game!

thanks for the quick replies!

My son LOVES Legos and of course, we all love Disney... and a baseball game is a great idea too! thanks!

The Lego Store is in the North Bridge shopping center, at Michigan, between Grand and Illinois streets (there is a Nordstom in that center, too; their signs overwhelm all the others, so look for the Nordstrom signs). There is also an ESPN Zone super-arcade at North Bridge, on the Ohio St. side. American Girl Place is on Chicago Ave., seven blocks due north, near the Water Tower. For gamers, there is also a Dave & Buster's on Clark @ Oak.

There are a Ghirardelli Chocolate shop *and* the huge new Hershey Store on the other side of the little Water Tower Park from AGP; it's chocolate heaven. There is also a really huge bookstore on that corner, great browsing and a nice children's section. Don't miss the Children's Museum at Navy Pier; that will keep them both busy for the better part of an entire day. Another cool thing to do at Navy Pier in warm weather, if they are brave, is the Sea Dog cruise; it's a VERY fast boat ride on the Lake.

I live near Nashville and would love to take a trip.. either Chicago or New York.. which would be better and where should we stay??? We are into Bitty Baby.... do people go when they are just into the Bitty Baby or do they wait till they have a big doll?

Navy pier is a trip that the whole family will enjoy. If the day is clear a trip to the the john hancock center 96 fl will be great. On the 95th fl you can have lunch which is very good and it will also give you a great veiw of the city. You will be on north michigan ave and there are plenty of stores and places to shop and visit. Make sure you stop at the popcorn shop on michigan ave.The best that you will ever have.

DD8 and I went with friends to AGP last summer. In addition to all things mentioned, we had a GREAT time at Shedd Aquarium -- they have a fabulous dolphin show! Another tip is to take the water taxi from Navy Pier to the Aquarium and museum area -- provides a great view of the city from the lake, for a pretty reasonable price.

We live in northern Indiana and my DM and I took a train to Chicago for my DD's 4th birthday last summer. :earsgirl: She loves her Bitty Baby, too and she took her doll (they dressed alike as many of the girls there did.) We started at the Bitty Bear Matinee- they have a theatre show for girls ages 3-6- it was so cute! Then we shopped and had lunch there. Make reservations, it was packed! They put a candle in her dessert and sang Happy Birthday for no extra charge. You can do a more elaborate birthday party, but we decided not to and spend our money on shopping. They have chairs for the dolls to sit in at the table and they bring the dolls a plate and cup so the girls can feed them too. It is absolutely precious to see all those little girls and their very loved dolls. We are planning on making it a trip every year and she is already talking about turning 5 so she can go to the "Bitty Baby Store." I hope you enjoy your trip!!

We went for Bitty Baby alone... they have their own seperate rooms! Very cute!

Another place for the guys is the Nike Store. It's pretty close and also a big Disney store too... but you may want to go there too!

I just can't help but show off since we're on the topic of Bitty Babies!!!

No you do not need a doll, but if you would like them to have tea or lunch them you need reservations! Like call two minutes ago! But be prepared that there may be doll purchasing going on.

There is also the ESPN zone for manly things! You may enjoy that! It is on Ohio.

I answered this question on the Budget Board - DD9 loves taking a trip into the city, I go on Betterbidding, and bid for a hotel....

I reccommend you heading over to www.betterbidding.com and try and do the Priceline and Hotwire deals!! This site will tell you, or you can post a question, after you've read up on things!! Even the 2 1/2* hotels listed are in a good place if you stick to the Michigan Avenue hotels, just read (it takes time) there is a lot of information on the hotels!! (I was able to get the Hyatt for $45 a night! We had an amazing view!! But there was no pool!!) (and even tho the Hyatt is down by the River, its not that big of deal to walk down Michigan Avenue to the AG Place - its a wonderful thing!!) I cant imagine doing AG all day - but I do have a gf who flew from Texas just to do AG - all DAY!! I do love the play - and it is hard to make reservations!!

Oh and I also reccommend going over to the Metra site.. http://www.metrarail.com/ look on attractions by Union Station This is a great site for planning to eat etc http://metromix.chicagotribune.com/ and if you are going to go on the museum tours, try the bus routes http://www.transitchicago.com/ taking a taxi from a hotel on Ohio Street to Museum of Science and Industry cost me over $20!! So not worth it, see if the free trolleys are running too -http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalEntityHomeAction.do?entityName=Special+Event s&entityNameEnumValue=38

The first time we went my son was with us, he and dh got overwhelmed, and just waited outside lol!! Next time it became a girls day event!!

Also cross-posted to the Budget Board:

Be SUPER CAREFUL re: using Hotwire, and most especially Priceline, for hotel ressies in the Mag Mile area or the Loop in Chicago. Both services only guarantee that the rooms will have space for 2 persons, and in the older hotels in Chicago, that may mean one double bed with no room for a rollaway. Generally, the higher the star rating the less likely this is to happen, but it is still risky. Personally, I won't take the chance on bidding only one room on anything less than 4.5 stars if I need to accomodate 3 or more people, or if I absolutely HAVE to have separate beds. Note that a bid for two rooms will not guarantee connecting rooms; that is up to the hotel after the fact, and they won't always have them available.

For pretty good prices without the stress of bidding, I recommend www.hotrooms.com; they are a Chicago-only consolidator. The Convention and Visitors Bureau (choosechicago.com) also sometimes has good rates for Chicago.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE YOUR FINAL DATES, be sure to go to http://www.choosechicago.com/smi/calendar.cfm to check on whether or not any major conventions are scheduled on your preferred dates. Generally, if there are more than 20K attendees TOTAL expected that weekend, you are going to find decently-priced hotel rooms nearly impossible to find in the Mile/Loop areas. Chicago does NOT have enough hotel rooms in these areas to meet demand on major convention weekends. If you really need to stay in the Mile/Loop area, don't buy airline tickets or tell your kids you are going until you check this; major disappointment could ensue. The suburban hotels close to the Metra lines almost never sell out completely, but getting to them can be awkward for those flying, especially if you are arriving at Midway.

I second the Sea Dog on the Navy pier. It was awesome! I am a 16 year old girl but my dad and little brother loved it too! :lovestruc The big Hershey chocolate store is also nice. Have fun! :wizard:
