OT - Adoption Shower

Been there done that also. My friends and family gave showers after our dd came home. She was new born but if she wasn't it would have been the same way. It is all about knowing that everyone accepts that this child is yours.

So, I am going to give a shower to friends coming home with their son from guatemala. He will be over 1. One thing I will do is gift cards. Leap Frog has some excellent learning toys and I think even some spanish/english ones. i think frozen dinners would be nice also. Bringing home an older child is a joy but there will still be an adjustment period kinda like a newborn............time to adjust, time to bond, etc. Things could be hectic for a little while. Supper is always a stressor for me so that could help also. Clothing also. Sometimes children are a little smaller due to different cultures/different foods offered. Hope this help!! Adoption is a wonderful thing, just look at my precious gift from God below!!

We adopted our princess from Guatemala also:goodvibes
I recently received a book called "twelve gifts of birth" Wonderful wonderful book.
There are soooooo many books out there (some good and some not so good) on adoption (for kids)
This book was just about the gifts of birth. I can not begin to tell you how much this book means to me. This book is now on my must buy list for anyone adopting or giving birth.
It is a wonderful keepsake.

Also there are some great Life books out there that are very nice too. Baby books never seem to fit when adopting (no matter what age) Life books are great. You can google them.

Adoption.com has an online store that has wonderful things.

Cafepress.com has GREAT Guatemalan hats shirts, bibs.... etc... for all ages. I have gotten some great stuff from them.:)

The Adoption Annex on Long Island NY probably also has some great ideas.

It opened after we adopted our son, but people have great things to say about it.

I know the OP has already shopped...and as the adopting mom, those were great ideas. My DD was 7 when she came home and the best gifts that we got from the shower that I hadn't realized that we would need is gift certificates to WalMart/Target and to quick food places like Chick Fil A and McDonalds. That little stuff adds up quickly! And I had NO IDEA my time was going to be sucked away so much so the convenience was great.

Our DD was a baby when we adopted her so we needed most of the typical shower stuff. A book might be a good option.

and I'm not hormonal! But your thread has brought me to tears like a Kodak commercial to a pregnant woman!

Thanks for being willing to participate in a shower for someone you don't even know. It is so nice to know that others recognize the significnace of every child. Showers are a great way to celebrate.

And thanks to you moms that have adopted children who I can only believe were created to be your children from the very beginning. Being a mom is hard work.

I'm also one of those people who loves to give showers for each baby. I know the stuff is useful (especially with the first child) but for me it was always about celebrating the child. And now thinking about how stressful it is to have a baby in the household..or any new child...I have another argument for a shower for anyone receiving a new child into the household. It is about bonding...and freeing the parents up to be better parents.

I also love the gift idea on this thread...for a child of any age.
