OT: A fairly inexpensive carseat that's easy to hook up

I guess since my DD's 3 I never thought about the fact that she's big enough for a backless booster, but then again I haven't researched carseats in a while.

I think that would work a lot better for us than getting another toddler carseat, we've also got another Britax in my MIL's car (thought about asking for it back, but that would create yet another complication). We're not in my DH's truck often enough that I would worry about her dozing off like she does in my car, so I think a booster seat would be fine. It also seems like it would be easier traveling, too (next week, I'll have to go buy one).

Any thoughts on this? Which brand/model?

I am not a car seat nut like some people but I couldn't imagine putting my 3yo in a backless booster. Her and my 2yo are both at the weight for one but I would be a nervous wreck. But for a backless one I have used the standard graco one. My 8yo just stopped using it a few months ago.

Four years and 40lbs is the BARE minimum recommendation for moving up to a booster seat. That is why people are recommending as seat like the Graco Nautilus. It harnesses to 65lbs has 18" top slots then converts to both a High and Low back booster. A three yr old is really not mature enough to stay seated properly 100% of the time in a booster seat, and in addition, the most current research shows that the childs hips and spine do not fully mature until they are between 5-6yrs old, so this is why a 5pt harness is much safer at this age.

When she does get to be old enough for a booster, a high back booster provides about 70% more protection in a side impact. Low backs are really for kids that have outgrown their high back boosters, or for vehicles where the seats are incompatible with a HBB because of non-adjustable tilted headrests. You can read more about why a 5pt is safest HERE. I have also found http://www.cpsafety.com/ and www.car-seat.org to be wonderful sources of information. The people on car-seat.org can also help you with the install issues you may be having with your current seat (you mentioned in your first post).

hth!

For safety, that's a baaaaad idea. Keeping them in a nice 5 point harness as long as you can is a gooooood idea. The fact that your kiddo CAN be in a booster is using the minimum requirements, and according to the car seat folks on other websites, it is based on 10 year old info, technology, and equipment.

But the Nautilus *becomes* a booster seat, once that is, by safety standards, more appropriate for her.

WDWorBUST, if you look on gracobaby.com, you can see the three seat cover designs. They aren't that much different than each other!

Okay, so I guess that idea's out.

I took a look at the Nautilus, I really liked the fact that the weight limit is high (the reason why I bought my Britax), but I'd like to buy one this week. Now, I'm never one to rush purchases, but as beautiful as the one is I have now, I'd like to get a new one for our WDW trip next week (that we could later use) because we've been struggling with it.

By the way, DH had some major back surgery in '06, so we can't lug around anything too heavy.

Did you check the store in stock option on Walmart website?

Yup, they don't have it.

It's in stock at another store, but it's a ways away. As much as I hate buying things from Wal-Mart and don't have time to make a special trip, maybe I'll go pick one up tommorrow.
