Orthotics

I looked into Dr scholls once, I tried the machine that measures your feet, problem is whenever it was done it suggested insoles that cost $60.
I bought new shoes instead

Custom from the doctor. My insurance covers 100%. :)

Before I got those, I was using Lynco off the shelf orthotics. Not much more than the Dr Scholls w/ the machine but felt waay better. Some shoe stores have the fitting machine for them. if you can't find one, I'd just order them online.

I looked up the Costco ones, and it sounds like they don't sell them anymore??? If they do, they didn't have very good reviews.

EDIT: this is the Lynco one I used. Think it's cheaper on Amazon. They have a selector on the website to help you pick which one you need.

Thanks. We did have 100 percent coverage for 25ish years. Then, after we were retired (10 years) the company my husband worked for went bankrupt, was sold and, restructured. Took another 3 1/2 years for the dust to settle which left us with no benefits. Today we found out many things are no longer covered in our new scaled back benefits package. We now have 'NO' Orthotic coverage... sigh.

Jane have you tried any specialty shoe stores? We have some stores here that specialize in shoes for walking or running. They can look at your shoes and make suggestions based on the wear & tear on your current shoes, they have you try on some different styles, watch your gait and how you land on your feet when you walk. Not to say you wouldn't still need orthotics, but the right shoe would be a good place to start. :)

I've needed custom orthotics since 1999. They are expensive and my insurance didn't cover them. My doctor retired so I found another doctor. He told me to save my money and buy Powerstep Pro. This is the website https://www.powersteps.com/shop-products/protech-orthotics/protech-control-full.html I believe that you can find them on Amazon, too. I just go to my orthopedic doctor. It is around 40.00 at my doctors. I truly love them and so happy to be out of custom orthotics.

My daughter needed them. She didn’t like the way they fit in her shoes. So we get her Vionics now. She’s much happier.

Thanks Micca. This is so foreign to me but, all the help I get here is greatly appreciated. :)
What is your opinion of JiminyC's reply?

Awesome! I have had custom orthotics and shoes since 1997. This is a daunting task starting in unfamiliar territory. Thanks for your experience it is greatly appreciated.

You are very welcome. I've bought two of these orthotics so far in about an 18 month time frame. I can wear Vionics but not for a length of time but they will get me through a night. I wear Vionic flip flops at the beach and love them. I haven't been able to wear flip flops for years and now I can go to the beach and not look like a dork, LOL.

I tried non-custom inserts for years. I thought that custom orthotics were a scam until I finally tried some. Now I love them and I won't go back to non-custom inserts!

I've had good success with The Walking Company, which might be in your local mall. They have a computerized thing that scans your feet, and recommends one of three different kinds of orthotic. They have a lot of good shoe brands in various categories, or you can just buy the orthotics ($50-ish). I had terrible foot and leg pain from overpronation that was really limiting my activity, and they figured out the problem and got me into a pair of sandals with a posted heel footbed that eliminated the pain immediately. It saved my summer. If you buy their store brand (ABEO), the shoes come with a pair of removable orthotics that you can put in other shoes.

Very true. I cringe when I hear Dr Scholls get thrown out and a few that sports stores sell as well. I wasted so much money back in 1998 and early 1999. Then had my foot surgeries on both feet in 1999 and always wore my customs for all those years. The non custom brand that my new doctor sells is awesome, however.
