My 11yo DD had spacers put in today, they are little blue things that will make room between her teeth for a metal spacer in a couple of weeks.

One of them is really bothering her, she can't bite on that side at all. They said it would make it uncomfortable so I'm telling her that is normal but thought I'd check to make sure I wasn't lying ;) I can only imagine how she is going to be when she gets her real braces if this is her reaction to just these.

Is it going to be a long couple of years???? She has a pretty bad overbite so braces are definately in her future.

DD's one spacer really hurt for a couple of days - then it fell out - I just gave her tynolal when she asked for them

First of all....it's not as bad as it was when I had braces (back in the 70's). Next, believe it or not, the time does fly and the orthos can do wonders...quickly....I might add! My son got them on in Oct., 2001. Well, that's when he got the full set in. First, we did the spacers, then just the back bands along with a bite plate. He also had a severe over-bite...he could stick his tounge through it! With this bite plate, within only months...the bite was signifigantly improved! This plate realigns the bite and since they are still young, the brain builds more jaw bone to realign it! I thought the orthodonist had really lost it when he told me this, but, IT WORKS!! He no longer needs the bite plate and there is no more overbite!! It also made space in his mouth to hold all the teeth. When I was a kid, they just removed the back teeth!

Now, for the pain. I think there was only a few times my son really complained. I found having Aleve for the pain helps. Also Ambesol, or the throat sprays do wonders, at a fraction of the cost! Have soft foods available after they are first "installed" or after any 'major' adjustments.

You'll be through this! If you need any more advice, don't hesitate to ask!
:)

My DD os n her second round of braces. I have always given her tylenol when she complained that it was really bothering her too. It seemed to help. After a while they get used to it, and it will hurt for a day or two when they adjust and tighten them. {{{HUGS}}} to you and her...

DD had pain and trouble chewing everytime hers were adjusted/tightened..tylenol for 24 hours always worked.....

we got in the habit of planning meals around her ortho appointments, so we always had soft food for her..

The spacers are generally uncomfortable for a couple of days while the teeth shift ever so slightly. Usually, the pressure subsides once the mouth gets used to it. In my experience, my daughter had less problems with the braces than the spacers. Just give advil or tylenol for the pain!

I'm glad I saw this thread as my DS is about to go through this process.

Just got his first 2 teeth removed yesterday & has 2 more to go in a couple of weeks.

I had no idea these separators could cause any pain. I think I better warn DS so he is prepared.

{{HUGS}} to you & your DD tho, my DS has a serious overbite also.

With both of my DD's, the spacers were worse than the braces! Whenever their braces were adjusted, they'd take Tylenol, and Dairy Queen milkshake!!:teeth:

AAAAH! Spacers... bad bad memories. My mouth was so tender for about 3-5 days.

Braces aren't usually uncomfy unless you have a sore... or after you get them tightened and you're teeth are shifting (but the pain only lasts about 3 days)

I am a 23 year old adult with braces and remember the pain all too well from the spacers!

Spacers do hurt worse than braces! That's a fact. I had to wear spacers for 5 whole days....and those days seemed to drag as all I could eat was Mac & Cheese and eggs. :( No amount of pain killers could alleviate the pain.

Everyone has different levels of thershold for pain. The first year of my brace treatment, I was eating soft foods for up to 2 weeks after my visit to have my braces adjusted. Now on my second year of my brace treatment, I'm not eating soft foods hardly at all! Just had my braces adjusted July 16, and 2 days later I was chopping on celery in potatoe salad. :)

but try baby Numz-it. it numbs the teeth and gums fast and it taste isnt bad.

mabe try orajel

and cloroseptic throat (Isodettes) spray it says on the bottle for the temporary relief of pain due to canker sores, injury to the mouth and gums, minor dental procedures, dentures or othodontic appliaces.

Also ask you ortho for wax. and have Daughter put that were the spaces are.

DD is getting braces in a few weeks. I don't know what to expect. I've never had any dental work, not even a cavity. Also her top 2 teeth on the sides of the big ones are very small. The ortho. said when her braces come off the dentist will bond the 2 smaller teeth.

My dd didn't like the spacers either, but they did the trick and within a couple days they stopped hurting.

Oh, yes, the memories. Had braces in my 20's. Had two wisdom teeth pulled, went home and ate pork chops. Had two spacers put in a few weeks later.........couldn't even eat ice cream until it melted. lol.............But I am a bona fida wimp! But it is worth it and the pain doesn't last but for a few days! I hope they pass quickly for both of you!

I'm not sure if that's normal or not (I've never had spacers or braces). I hope her mouth stops hurting soon though.:( My 10 yo will need braces soon. She's looking forward to it.

spacers do hurt . i use tynol i had 8 teeth removed before the surgery to remove 8 i had braces and i ate lot of soft foods

Yep, my spacers hurt too, as well as my braces when i got them tightened. It's been...hm...it's been 7 years since i have had them off. Made my teeth beautiful, BUT, ask the ortho about how your child's jaw is going to feel after the braces. See, i have straight teeth, but i have so much trouble with my jaw from the braces. It clicks almost all of the time and is painful. I now where a bite guard as much as possible and go to the dentist to try and fix my jaw.
